"Do Pilates Really Deliver Results?"
===============================
QUESTION:
Hi Tom, I recently purchased your ebook BFFM and it is
awesome! I have a question that has been hounding me
for years now. Does stretching elongate a muscle after
it's been worked? I have a lot of fitness tapes and a
lot of times they say after aerobics and weight lifting
you have to stretch to elongate the muscle as this will
give a leaner look to the legs. I also have a pilates tape
that says that the pilates workout will elongate the
thighs and make them look thinner.
I would apreciate your input on this to get this settled
once and for all. Thanks for your help.
Sally
ANSWER:
Hi Sally
Pilates is great for people who enjoy that type of exercise.
For maximum results, I would recommend incorporating it addition
to a program of resistance training and cardio, not in place
of it. That's not because I think Pilates is ineffctive or
doesn't have benefits, it's simply that some of the claims
being made for certain videos and classes are stretching the
truth a bit (bad pun intended).
"Pilates will elongate the thighs" or "stretching will
make your thighs slimmer" is a myth. I find that many people
get into Pilates because they would like a "ballet dancer"
type of physique (lean, "long", and fit, but not overly
muscular), and the "elongate your thighs" pitch appeals
to that group.
Truth is, each person has genetically inherited tendon
origin and insertion points which determine the length of
each muscle. Stretching will increase the range of motion
you can move your joints through - that's called "flexibility,"
but it does NOT change the length or physical appearance of
your muscles.
Although you can't change your inherited muscle shape and
length, you can dramatically improve the way you look by
(1) strength training, which increases lean body mass and
improves your muscularity, and (2) body fat reduction, which
is achieved with cardiovascular exercise and a nutrition
program like Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle.

genetically inherited body type, and which shows you how to
