I used to live in the uk so i could try to give you a clue of what are the main differences from my country Italy.
If you move down here, you will notice how better is our food, wearing and general lifestyle, thanks to weather. You will feel like living in a big family, as people are very friendly, sometimes even too curious. It much depends on place you will be living in, if a big city or a small country.
Customer care and infrastructures are crap, you might find yourself queuing for hours at the postal office or bank, and you might end up with none solution. Be very careful when you want to cross the road, cars rarely stop even if you walk on pedestrian strips. Never queue when you wanna get the bus, just jump on it, we are a bit wild on here.
Try to learn Italian, not many talk a fluent English here, even if they will try to be helpful and co-operative.
If you have more questions, please get in touch with me.

Hi! 1st of all you mentioned not your purpose for this journey! 2ndly do you speak any italian ?
If you're an authentic Englishman, do know that in Italy life's a bit different than in the "City" and people are very warm and expressive down there! They talk all over the places and some times giggle around! They like nice food and nice outfits and they always run after girls (and viceversa). They are extroverted to the maximum and you may see them dance and /or chanting by the streets at any time of the day or night!
They don't keep rituals, i.e. tea time at 5oopm and have no Pubs, but nice caffeterie, where you may taste the best cappuccino of your life or the best ice creams of your life as well! They are accustomed to helping others, when in need of help and the only ack. requiered is a simple "Grazie" (Thanks). But hell, if you don't grant beingness to them!!! You'll be banned immediately!
If you're not an expressive character, chose Northern Italy, i.e. from Florence and up!
Milano should be quite at home to a British gent. But an average good city'd be Modena.
Are you single or married ?
Pls, pend out a new question with more details........(if necessary).
Be my guest...Ciao.........John-John.

if your economic condition is not that bad then why not? afterall is a great country if you just rely on your homecountry as to other things ( healthcare,....)
The fees are high , people are friendly and it's quite a safe country
weather is great.
