Smart fabrics
Engineers have developed a type of fabric that knows where and how it is being touched.
The "smart" fabric has tiny electrodes woven into its pattern which tell it when it is pressed, pulled or bent. This means that electronic controls, such as the 'play' or 'stop' buttons on your MP3 player or mobile phone, that were previously made of metal or plastic, can now be made of fabric and can be stitched into your jacket or your rucksack. Another example is a keyboard. Most hand held mini-computers, or PDAs, have tiny keyboards that are too small to type on. Now you can use a fabric keyboard that literally rolls out flat and works just like a normal keyboard until you fold it away again!
