I would do the right thing, because that's how I was raised & I'd place an ad in the newspaper. The ad would be carefully worded, not mentioning the amount found or what the wallet looked like. I would list my phone number & tell the party to call & identify the amount in the wallet & what the wallet looks like. After a reasonable period of time, I'd then keep it. If there was ID in the wallet, I would try & find the owner. If there was no ID in the wallet, I'd keep the wallet. I would hope that if I'd lost a wallet, someone would also be honest enough to make an effort to return the wallet to me also.

Once I was in New York City and I walked by a company that boxes and ships valuable art pieces all over the world. Lying on the sidewalk by the front door there was a little wooden box about 12 inches long and 8 inches square.
I reached down and picked it up. I shook it gently, and there was someting inside. I was imagining a little statue or some other cool art piece.
I had an opportunity to take it inside, but what did I do? I carried it back to my truck to see what I had found! I got a screwdriver and carefully removed the screws. I lifted the lid, and inside I found...a dead pigeon!
I laughed for about two minutes straight because someone had really gotten me good. I closed the box, replaced the screws, walked back and put the box where I had found it. I am sure someone was rolling on the floor laughing somewhere, but I never saw a camera.
To answer your question: I would be inclined to leave it where I found it. Unless I was sure a pigeon would not fit in it at least.

I found something many years ago and handed it in to the police at Langley police station in Bucks.
Said item was "lost", not recorded, etc. However I had the receipt and was told I forged it. Ha Ha.
You set a crook to catch a crook remeber that and you will not go far wrong.
I was asked to dispose of a car owned by an ex copper that had died, it had been cloned, ringed or whathave you he had had it for 10years. In that time the garages MOTing it knew, you could not miss it. I did not know until after I got it so had to be careful how I got rid of it.
Now what was the question?

How about giving it to the Police? Or maybe trying to find a way to contact the person to give them the wallet back?
That being said, let me ask YOU a question, if I may.
What would you want someone to do if they found YOUR wallet with a thousand dollars in it?

I mean a thousand dollars is not a lot of money, but I would be able to do a little something. I would first see who it belongs to and then, I would keep it if they did not come forward to claim. I would think that the person who lost it would come looking for it.

A child found a large diamond and turned it into the police.
He was asked, "What made you turn this in, when you could have kept it, and no one would have ever known"?
"Well. If I lost a beautiful diamond like that, I sure would like to have it back."
A fireman in NY, found a large amount of cash in an office building, while fighting a fire. He stashed it in his shirt. When the fire was out, he turned it in.
I'm sure the child and the fireman had no problems sleeping.

You know, when I was 15 me and my friend actually found one up near Central Park. We called the cops, they located the owner and returned it. Bastard claimed it was a few hundred short, and never even said thanks. I still return found wallets cause another time one had only 30 bucks, but it was a single mom that had dropped it and needed food for 2 kids.

Depends what was in it. If it was just cash, there is no way the police would be able to prove it is someones, so I would probably keep it.
If it had cards in it, then I would definately hand it it. You never know, the man who's wallet it is might even give you some money for helping

I would call the person who's name that was in the wallet and try and reunite the two. If I had a difficult time finding the person I would keep it, but I would try!
