--More stress, if people have families or friends to buy stuff for, or if they do the decorations or parties or whatnot....

--More lonliness...if people don't have families or friends, this is one of those things. It starts with Thanksgiving and lasts at least through New Year's Day. The holidays hype up how *Great* it is to be social and to be *with* people, and for some of us, that's just "rubbing it in", you know?

--Less *Sunlight* for at least half of the world. You can't underestimate this one. Winter can be bad for folks. Do a search on "Seasonal Affective Disorder", quotes and all, whole phrase. The short of it is, people sometimes *need* intense, whole-spectrum light, like sunlight, to function emotionally...and they sometimes need more than what's *there* where they live.

--Poverty. I know, people don't like to admit it, but some of us are just too poor to afford *one extravagant holiday* after the next after the next....and yes, there are charities that can help with that. Provided you *go through* their protocols, which get more strict and anal-retenitive year after year. Simply put, there are a *LOT* of control-freakish people in charge of what's supposed to be "charitable work" during the holidays.

And the alternative...is to go without. I spent most of my childhood *not* having Christmas most years, *not* having a meaningful Thanksgiving. So I am rather used to the *idea* that the holiday doesn't mean *anything* for folks like me...but the reality of it still stings a bit. Being alone, an outsider and an outcast on *this too* still hurts.

So yeah....take your pick. ^_^ I hope this helps...count your blessings, really. "...thank God it's *them*/instead of *you*..."

Your right bu it this isn't just a holidays it's Christmas a long established christian day of remembrance of Jesus birth. Nothing wrong with Santa and the exchanging of gifts it's symbolic It's like Christmas gives a permission slip that let's people drop their facade and be more gentler and kinder to others as you noted strangers do smile at each other. This time of year brings out an almost spiritual well being. We all know how hectic this holiday can get this is mostly due to over commercialization and the stress can be over whelming yet people have that tendency to be nice to each others. It does seem false and temporary as Christmas and the New year enters people revere back to their guarded life's.xoxoxoxoxo

Lots of reasons. They worry about the money being spent and the credit card debt that they will incur. Getting together with family can be stressful because of infighting. This is true especially if you can't stand your in-laws but you are expected to be at their party. All the fake parties that you have to go to. Some people are lonely or have no place to go to.

I do because I don't want to be around all those people. Its loud and noisy and you can't go anywhere with out those bright colored lights giving me a headache. Its just to cold out for all that rubbish. Almost all of the fuss takes away from the reason for the season anyway.

Yep thats me, the local Grinch.

its because of the hectic months you have been through ( not U, you) b4 your holidays.
see, if you go to school and suddenly for a whole month school stops, yr body -especially your brain -feels there is nothing to do. so u tend to go in depression or feel sad coz there is nothing you can do to make your mind work. its obvious that u wont do any holidayhomework in the 1st week of yr vacations..
same applies for people who are working.
but i guess for them, they need a time out for atleats a week but when there is nothing exciting or interesting to do in vacations they also feel like goingback to their normal routine.

Sometimes sad things happen around the holidays and they're just a reminder.
