Acts 2 1:1-13
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
... A crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome; Cretans and Arabs - we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

I find this very strange. How is it possible for these believers to know that they were each talking their own native languages, when each person can only hear the others speaking in their own language?

You realize that you understand someone you couldn't understand earlier or by the mode of dress and mannerisms you know the person is from far away and is a stranger here, but he is speaking the local dialect perfectly. After awhile you just start to figure out that you aren't hearing the language they are speaking, but a miracle has happened.

Verse 4 tells they were with holy spirit ,able to speak with different languages as granted by spirit.
verse 5 states there were people from all tribes and nations
Verse 6 they all came together because each one could understand his own language from one or more of when the sound occured and they were given spirit to speak different languages to spread the preaching work to the ends of the earth.

Miraculous speaking in tongues as a God-given gift was experienced for the first time by about 120 of Christ’s disciples assembled in Jerusalem during the Jewish Festival of Pentecost in 33 C.E. But was it just a spectacle to attract the curious? No, the Bible clearly shows that this was for the purpose of witnessing to foreigners visiting Jerusalem; these, too, needed to know “about the magnificent things of God.” (Acts 2:8-11; 1:15) Those “tongues” were neither gibberish nor obscenities. They were clearly understood.
This gift was a part of early Christian worship. But the apostle Paul pointed out, at 1 Corinthians 13:8: “Whether there are tongues, they will cease.” As the congregation grew and matured, these “tongues” were no longer necessary.
What about modern-day miraculous “tongues”? A former Hindu priest who joined a Pentecostal church further said of worshipers that some at times “even mention the names of Hindu Gods, for example, ‘Siva, Siva, Siva,’ in their shouting.”
Of course, when a church member speaks in a foreign tongue, usually nobody knows what is being said. The apostle Paul, however, said: “Therefore let the one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may translate.” (1 Corinthians 14:13) Seldom is this counsel followed. The babbling certainly bears no resemblance to the orderly manifestations of God’s spirit that first-century Christians observed. It bears the earmarks of a demonic deception.

It's easy if you look at it from the reverse. Don't think of it as what the others are hearing, but what the speakers are saying...i.e. If the person is only SPEAKING in one language, and yet EVERYONE can understand in their own language, something mysterious has to be at work.
Also, at some point someone would have to point out that they were hearing it in their own language for this conversation to even begin.

That is the sign of the TRUE Tongues...not those spoken in churches nowadays.
Example: A native Fijian speaks and all cultures and Dialects understand every word spoken...Thats the TRUE Tongues.

When properly understood, hearing is a spiritual sense, and God was showing man this as they heard understanding, regardless of native language.

douglas adams deals with this in his parable of the babelfish in 'the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy'.
the answer is easier than most believers are able to understand (and entirely in keeping with chomskyan notions of pre-linguistic semantics in the human brain).
(of course the problem that the apostles would have had - even if the paraclete had supplied each one with a custom babelfish - would be that they would still have fallen to the gigo principle).
