These are the true all-stars.

It is far more important an honour to be a post-season all-star, then it is to play the all-star game. These are voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. You can be a first team all-star and a second team-all-star.

As Coach Scott mentions, Ray Bourque was a 1st team all-star 13 times, Gordie Howe was a 1st team all-star 12 times, and Bobby Hull and Doug Harvey were 1st team all-stars 10 times.

Gordie Howe made a post-season all-star team 21 times in 26 years
Ray Bourque made a post -season all-star team 19 times in 22 years
Wayne Gretzky was a post-season all-star 15 times.

Nicklas Lidstrom is the current leader with 8 post-season selections in 15 years (a record that pales in comparison to Bourque, Harvey, and Orr)

A first team all stars (and second team) is an honor given out by the NHL at the end of each season. It has nothing to do with voting or competing in the all star game. The first team all stars are the 6 players deemed to be the best at their position each season - followed by the 2nd team.

The most all time by any player is Ray Bourque at 13 times.
