I'll tell ya why. Because Bush smeared McCain in the South Carolina Primary. After that McCain couldn't recover. McCain came into S.C. leading the pack. But Bush decided to use push polling. He had pollsters call up voters and ask them how they would feel about McCain if they knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child. What they didn't bother telling them was that McCain had ADOPTED an illegitimate black child.
So Bush played on the South Carolina voters racism and moral disgust. But most of all he played on their ignorance and stupidity. McCain was never able to recover after losing that primary. The voters didn't bother checking it out to see if it the accusation was true or not. And they didn't bother to remember that McCain suffered in a prison camp for his country.
Just another example of Bush using the end to justify the means.

The mullahs of the GOP wanted tool-boy Bush over an independent thinker like McCain. So, with the help of folks like Rush and various lies spread through the electorate, they claimed McCain was a Democratic Party tool. And look what we got - the worst, most partisan president in history.

I like McCain, but I do remember a few unforgivable blunders during 2000. One of which (made me laugh), was calling Chelsea Clinton a dog face (can't remember it exactly) or something, on the floor of the Senate. It was rude and inexcusable, in the sense it showed lack of self control.
It's a shame, because he is a pretty honest guy (sometimes too honest). I think people fear he may be a loose cannon of sorts.

We were not in Iraq in 2000. But you have a very good point. i liked McCain and would certainly like to have had him as president.Maybe Bush had more pull with his name than McCain did.

because mccain supported the banishment of free-speech with campaign fincance reform, which, btw, has been a abject failure....what kind of question is that anyway??? heck, bush was a g.d. fighter pilot during the vietnam war...his unit just wasn't called up..serving in the military is serving in the military...we don't base our vote for president based on whether a person was tortured by the enemy...we don't base our choice for prez because a nominee is black or a woman, we base it on concrete information...if you're so concerned about voting causes and affects, why on earth does hillary clinton walk around with a g.d. mullet hairdo in 2007? talk about ponderous political choices, there's one for you....."design d"...i think what mccain said was that chelsea looked like she had been hit in the face with a sackful of nickels....lol...LOL..good one mccain...

The irrational-right/religious-right didn't like McCain; they couldn't control him so easily and he doesn't buy into the "New American Century" concept. GB, on the other hand, demonstrated his 1-ply nature.
