Require, no, benefit from, maybe.

If your HDTV is larger than about 40" and is 1080p (and has HDMI input) you would definietely benefit from an HD player (HD DVD or Blu-Ray), BUT if not you might as well stick with your existing DVD player (as long as it is "progressive", i.e. 480p output). Your HDTV will upscale the DVD to whatever its native format is and will look (almost) as good as HD DVD or Blu-Ray.

However, if you wanted to go one better, get an inexpensive HD DVD player (Toshiba HD-A2 or A3) and use it as an upconverting DVD player for DVDs and as an HD DVD player for the occasional movie that justifies HD. Just be sure to connect via and HMDI cable (to be sure of getting HD) ... you don't need to buy an expensive one (check Monoprice.com).

Just keep in mind that HD disks (HD DVD or Blu-Ray) are more expensive than DVDs (and not yet available widely for rent).

I might offer a counter-opinion:

Standard DVD's are based on the old television standard of 480 lines of information. You can buy progressive players, you can buy up-converting players, but the information on the disk is still based on the 1940's television standard to fill a 9-inch screen.

The difference in quality between a standard DVD and real HD is shocking. And I base this on my HD cable box that only produces 720 output. Your new television should be able to display 1080 and be even better.

So I strongly recommend getting either a HD-DVD player, or a PS3 so you can play BluRay disks.

Note: Your old DVD player will hook up to your HDTV just fine. You dont HAVE to change if that is what you are asking.

HD disc will purely play on HD DVD participant, similar as Blu ray disc will will play on Blu ray disc participant. yet both HD participant (now no longer being made) and Blu ray disc will play prevalent dvd videos alongside with CD. HD participant and HD videos were discontinued now for 2 years. the television will received't count number what participant you take advantage of. wish this can help you out.

Yes -you will need an HD DVD player that plays HD DVD or a Blu-ray player that plays blu-ray discs to watch High Definition (HD) movies on your HDTV.
