The cross on which Jesus was purportedly crucified has never been located. Even if an ancient cross were discovered, how would anyone know that it was THE cross ? The ancient Romans crucified thousands of people, and used multiple wooden crosses to do so.

It's not, it's broken up (supposedly) into lots of fragments. A lot of churches have relics of the 'true cross' but most of them are probably fakes. Back in the dark ages there was a thriving business for people who went around selling fake 'fragments of the True Cross' and other Christian relics after the success of the first Crusade.
