Yes and Trust me you want to take it. You don't want to go in with out a rate picked out, it is way harder to advance and get into career bracket. Its just like taking the SAT's and it will have a few more questions to show what you have and aptitude for, electronics, nuke, machines etc. you can just strike a rate, but your in for a tough, slow ride. Your recruiter will force you to take it.

And the better you score, the more schools you are eligible for. A high score is the only way to make sure that you get the job you want. A low score gets you things like spray painting the side of a ship or carrying a heavy pack on foot from Riyadh to Baghdad.

An ASVAB score is necessary to enlist in the military, however if you go through ROTC and become an officer an ASVAB score is not necessary.

Each branch of the military has a cut off score that you need to make in order to enlist in their respective branch. Also, the score is used ensure that you are capable of performing certain jobs. The higher you score, the more opportunities you will have.

Bitsy, an 89 woud get him into pretty much any rate he wants in the Navy. Congrats on the good score.

Yes, but it's super easy and theres no way you can fail it. It highlights your strengths and weaknesses to help you decide which career path in the military is right for you.

I think my son got an 89 on the ASVAB, is that pretty good? OK, thanks Big John, he did get the rating he wanted, but I didn't know for sure!!!
