If she has a registery go off of that first!!!!!! The girl who is getting married spend several hours sometimes days in stores picking out exactally what she wants for her new home. Then after the wedding she opens the gifts expecting the new vacuum, dishes, sheet sets and such, and ends up wih fifteen silver wedding photo frames cause someone thought it was "nice". Believe me if she has a register that is what she wants. If not think of her favorite color and try to go with something of that sort. I have a friend who didn't have a registry, but her favorite color was purple and I knew she needed dishes. so I found a lovely set of purple dishes, cups, blah blah blah, place mats the works! and it was a big hit. good luck.

Yes, I need some help too! Attending a wedding held at a beach resort in Bali. We're paying for our own airfares & accommodation there, but we've got no idea what makes a good gift for such weddings! Besides, the wedding couple is very rich and seems to have everything. If it's cash, we're not sure what amount is right too. HELP!

It wasn't so much the gift as the circumstances. It was the night before my wedding and I was at my office working late to make sure everything was done before I went on my honeymoon. Some people from out of town stopped by when they saw my office light on and begged to use my fax for an emergency they were having. While it was going, we chatted and I told them I was to be married the next day. Well, after we took care of their paperwork, they went out to their car and came back with a gift. I'm guessing someone in their family had called off a wedding because the wrap was a bit smooshed. Still... it was sooo cool! I never even knew their names.

a good friend of mine told me the gift they most appriciated was a whole heap of board games. They had already moved in together recently before the wedding so they got a whole heap of electrical goods and everything that was useful, but people dont really often think of fun things like games. Plus it looks awesome when u buy them a whole heap and wrap them up individually, then stck them into a pyramid shape with the largest on the bottom with gold ribbon.

I agree that the best bet is going by the registry if they have one. If not, the next best thing is something really personal that shows you know them. You could also pay for one night of the honeymoon or pay for a surprise basket of goodies or wine to be in their hotel room. If you are looking for something "generic", here are a few things we got that I liked: Le Creuset pans, a beautiful handmade rug, a piece of artwork my husband coveted, a piece of pottery, a book of movie tickets, a shaker basket, some lovely porch chairs, a mantle clock.

I was a December bride, too! This was many years ago. The best gift I got was a note from the president & first lady. A friend dared me to invite them, so I did. It was so cool. I was heartbroken when all of my momentos got stolen during a move....

Ah, we got so many lovely things. We hadn't registered, so everything was a surprise!
Most used gifts were a hand-made comforter, which was lovely, and an electric frypan!
Special gifts were a full set of ethnic-designed china from my mom and siblings.
Other wonderful gifts - a pottery teapot with creamer and sugar (same people gave the matching mugs for the shower); bedsheets; soup tureens; crystal servingware.... and so many more!

Our best one was people who gave us money to put toward our honeymoon. We are able to go on a beautiful honeymoon in a couple of months because of all the extra money from them.
My friends were going to Mexico for their honeymoon, so I bought a Spanish/English dictionary, put a $50 in there and then wrote some phrases for them to use (I'm a Spanish teacher). They told me that they loved it because they were able to try out some Spanish and they used the money to have a nice dinner while they were down there.

Our honeymoon which was a gift from all of my grooms family. Other than that we got very few gifts as we insisted we have everything and we just wanted our friends to come celebrate with us, having said that we were given a gorgeous bottle of vintage champagne which we LOVED.

Someone gave us 10 bottles of wine, 5 each of five wines, and a note telling us which ones to drink on which anniversary for the first five years. They went to a very nice wine shop and probably got some help picking out things that would improve with age.
It was really sweet -- I copied the idea once.
