Someone at Best Buy told me the fullscreen DVD's will be available in two weeks. Is this true? Is this going to be the new thing in movie distribution: how many impatient people can we get to buy the version with the dumb empty spaces on top and below the film, before handing out the fullscreens? How dumb is that!! I hope that doesn't happen with "Spider-Man 3".

The first three answers have intrigued me. It appears I have to research the matter and compare the two versions. All this time I thought it was just a way of providing as much a cinema-type view as possible and nothing more. Anyone else care to give me some facts?

For movies like Transformers and Spider-Man 3, widescreen is the only way to go. It shows the complete video how it was meant to be seen without anything taken out. To make a movie fit to a TV full-screen about 30% of the video is taken off from the sides. In action movies, where the visual effects are a key part of the movie, that is too much to lose.

Sir, widescreen is the only way to go. The "empty spaces" are not dumb. They allow you to see the WHOLE movie. Fullscreen DVDs cut off the sides of the picture which, in the case of "Transformers," means you are losing about 40-50% of the picture.

Consider the widescreen only release a wonderful learning opportunity!

I always buy widescreen; you'd be surprised how much gets cut off with full screen (watch "Annie" - you'll see what I mean). And there's no "dumb empty space" with a widescreen TV.

Amazon sells a full screen copy of the movie. It's probably just Best Buy elected not to get them at this time due to the demand for widescreen DVDs for the reasons stated above.

doesn't bother me, I much prefer widescreen where you get the whole scene not just a cropped version, but your right I did notice all the dvd's were widescreen when I bought mine and thought it was a bit odd.
