Starting this year the quarterbacks have to wear them to show that they have the ability to talk to the coaches via headset. They are the only players on the field allowed talk to the coaches.

This is on the helmets of players with radio contact. It helps ensure that there is only one on the field at any given time - its easy for the refs to see.

Anyone who answers this question seriously gets a thumbs down from me. I am making it my personal mission here on yahoo answers to give thumbs down when someone askes about the green dot. I hope others will follow my lead and give people bad ratings for giving in and answring this question with the right answer.
I think we should also write a letter to yahoo and tell them to force people to search for the green dot question before they ask. It can be like a program that reads the question containing green dot and it automatically takes them to the answer page.
Down with the thumbs everyone!

I do think it's for the radio communication system between a player and the coaches.

For the 897th time, or somewhere near there, it is so the mothership can communicate with them. The aliens are among us and they are almost all in professional sports uniforms!
Sorry, but the same question gets asked several dozen times each week and I'm getting tired of seeing it.
