to go back in time and remove one religious figure or prophet or avatar from existence (you don't have to kill anyone, just prevent them from being born), who would it be and why?
Personally I'd be tempted to take out one of the big religions by taking out Jesus or Mohammad, but then I realize the vacuum would be quickly be filled by another religion and thus wouldn't be productive in the long run. So I would actually have to go with Sun Yung Moon and the Moonies because of their manipulation of the US political process and ownership of the Washington Post. Who would everyone else choose?

Jim Jones. He killed a lot of people who followed him.
I would be tempted to deal with a huge religious figure but most of them were good people sent by God. It is the followers and time that screwed up the original beliefs.

How about the crackpot who started mormanism? The idea that a wacky cult like that gets to wear the mantle of "religion" is one of the biggest reasons religious faith looks so absurd.
