I watched the first part of "The Gathering" last night and
they talked about Wiccan. What happened to the babies
that woman had? Is that what Wiccan really is?

Thank the TV movie then for exagerrating it. I am just curious.

I am actually sorry I asked this out
of curiousity. For the ones who
answered nicely, Thank You.
Wacky Lady, I know it's something
all right. Neither one of us brought
Christianity into it until the one lady
said something. No one knows
everything so you don't know
what is really going on in the
world.

Oh let me add:
Believer of God
I I see people writing their beliefs after
their comments.

What I think Wacky Lady meant,
where did she go, oh, well, is that
there are crazies in all religions.
I am suprised no one admitted that
as I admit some Christians are nuts.
Actually, there are the ones who
say they are but they really are not
and they take the religion to what
it is not suppose to be. Thank You.

Sadly, even a goodly portion of people who run around calling themselves Wiccan have no real clue what Wicca is about.

Frankly I'm still waiting for someone to do something that is really what Wicca is about, the problem is that REAL Wicca isn't "exciting" from a mass media point of view, any more than REAL Islam, REAL Buddhism, or REAL Christianity are "exciting".

Sadly while you might get some small idea what Wicca is in R&S, you will have to sift through an incredible amount of fluff to find it, which for someone who knows nothing about Wicca would be a most daunting task to say the least.

This I can say with some authority:

Wicca does not believe in child sacrifice

Wicca does not believe in animal sacrifice

The only sacrifices in Wicca are of things we personally own, and since we as a religion do not believe that we own any living thing other than our own bodies, we do not capture people to hack up on blood stained altars either.

Wicca is not looking for world domination

Wicca is not looking for religious supremacy

Wicca is not a shadowy arm of global terrorism

Wicca does not worship Satan, we don't even aknowledge that such a being exists

Wiccans are as normal as your next door neighbor, as a matter of fact, we might just be.

Wiccan rituals center around the Great wheel of life, Birth - Life - Death - Rebirth

I hope this helps.

Hmmmmm. Well, hubby and I don't have TV (by choice), and if what I've read about this mini-series is correct, it makes me more convinced that we made the right decision.

I cannot speak to the contents of the show, but I'll direct folks here to some of the comments that have been posted about it at the Lifetime Network site.

From what I read, it would seem that the show portrays Witches in a negative light (the usual - animal sacrifices, using spells for greed or personal gain or control of others), and apparently there are people naive enough to perhaps take it seriously.

It's for entertainment only (though I wonder how Christians would feel about the "entertainment" value of a mini-series with essentially the same plot, but with Christians in place of the "Witches" in this show, aired a couple of weeks before Easter or Christmas), it is NOT a documentary.

NO, "The Gathering" is not what Wicca really is. It's not what non-Wicca Witchcraft really is. It's not what Strega is, or Santaria, or any other kind of Witchcraft.

You know what's truly scary here? Not that such a mini-series was made, or aired on a network that purports to be supportive of women...but that ANYONE would actually entertain the idea that it might be an accurate portrayal of Wicca or any other form of modern Witchcraft.

Tessa, allow me to answer the last question first. Yes, Wicca IS real. Wicca is a Religion and as such, we give honor to BOTH a Goddess and a God (although there are exceptions to that (Dianic Wicca, being one)). We also acknowledge the Divine as being manifest in the Natural world around us, which kind of gives non-Wiccans the impression that we worship Nature. It is not Nature that we worship it is the Divine, and nature is only the conduit through which we do so. Wicca do not worship idols, we worship in front of statues (again there are many exceptions to this as well (Green Witches come to mind)). Christians do not worship the cross, they worship what the cross represents, it is precisely that same principle in Wicca. We conduct our ceremonies during the full moon (some also the new moon), and eight Sabbats which are spread out over the year (What many Wicca call the Wheel of the Year). These celebrations re-live certain phases in the life ages of the Gods and Goddesses and are done in commemoration of these Divine events. The Wicca recognize the existence of good and evil as inherent is ALL things, everything and everyone has the capability for BOTH (Even the Divine). Evil therefore, is an integral part of everything and one can not have one without the other. The key to this is balance, Wicca hold the concept of balance to be one of the core principles of the universe and al which exists. So, to answer your first question, there is NO being which is totally good or totally evil, only the intent of the individual determines whether a thing or an action is for good or evil. Therefore, as there is NO being assigned the nature of total evil (ie, a devil) it is impossible for us to worship such a being. NOw, as many member of Judeo-Christian-Islamic Faiths are so fond of stating in unequivocal terms, "if you do not worship the god of light and love, then you are worshiping the devil". They fail to realize that in order to worship anything or anyone, then worship MUST be the intent. There is no such thing as unknowingly worshiping anyone. We can NOT worship a concept which does NOT exist to us, therefore we do NOT worship the "Devil", as the "Devil" is NOT one of the Divine being concepts which exists within the Faith system of Wicca. It is as simple and direct as that. Does this make sense to you? Brightest Blessings, Raji the Green Witch

Stay tuned.

Not to "The Gathering," which sounds far-fetched and ridiculous even by Lifetime's drecky standards, but to the news. This is, after all, Halloween season.

You can be sure that during Halloween week, someone will interview what's-her-name (Laurie Cabot?) the "official" Witch of Salem, and somebody else will interview that Fiona Horne or whatever her name was from that "reality" show, or $ilver Ravingwoof, and some cluelessly inept "coven" somewhere will let CBS or Fox film their "circle" . . . replete with velvet robes and capes and fairy wings and overweight people with suspect personal hygiene (sorry, my lovely Wiccan friends, but you know they're out there too) reciting something they got off the Llewellyn shelf at Waldenbooks in the local mall . . .

None of that will be "real" Wicca, either, but it'll be a lot closer to the mark than anything you'll see in nonsense like "The Gathering," "The Craft," or "Practical Magic."

No. I know many Wiccans and they never sacrifice anything. The only group I have heard that actually might are insane teenagers.

Look up www.religioustolerance.org for a good summary of what Wicca actually is.

BTW there's no proof that any ancient pagan group ever did sacrifices. The only source that has ever written that was Julius Cesar, and he was writing to get people riled up to go conquer the Gauls. There's no archeaological evidence of such activity anywhere. The Celts did burn scarecrows as a symbolic symbol of the dying god of the harvest, but that's as close as it got.

I don't know what you are referring to but if it was on TV, unless it was an actual documentary or news report, that was a work of fiction and purely for entertainment value.

Wicca is a Neopagan religion, about 60 years old, whose adherents honor nature and the cycles of the seasons. They worship divinity in the form of male and female dualities, generically called the God and Goddess.

i'm not Wiccan,

but the answer is a somewhat obvious "no".

I only saw the beginning and the end, but i doubt they control crows and have them attack people.

and have some weird box on a bus that blows up as they chant and brand someone.

so no. no.no. no, and no.

Okay, let's try this:
Wicca is the name of the religion.
Wiccans are people who practice the religion.
There is no such term as "Wiccanism;" it is "Wicca."

Thank you.

I haven't seen what you're talking about, but if you're asking about whether or not we ritually sacrifice babies or something... a resounding NO.

Oh good goddess. Where do you guys get this stuff??
I'll leave this to the Wiccans.

Joe: I worship my gods. Are you admitting that they are a "creation"? You just admited they exist. I assure you I don't worship the earth or a tree.
