The last three Democratic Presidents were all southerners and all were solidly Left of Center. All were Religious without trading on it or pandering to the Fundies.
It's been my experience that folks aren't as Conservative as they think if you put things in terms that their cutlures make it easy for them to understand.
Do you think the Dems can overcome Political Correctness enough to give it a try?

Southerners are simple, Boomer. The mistake people make is in not recognizing that simple and stupid ain't the same thing.

Actually what is needed is for a candidate to actually tell the TRUTH! Someone has to step up to the plate and actually TELL folks what their proposed programs are going to cost the taxpayers. for instance, "you want to stopr illegal immigratin? We're going to have to hire 8,000 new border guards and it's going to cost you 6 Billion dollars. We can get it in TWO ways, we can CHARGE immigrants "x" number of dollars to enter the country OR we can raise taxes by .2 %, YOU make the choice" Or, "You want tighter port security? Well we'll need to hire 5,000 Customs service inspectors and buy 50 huge S-ray machines. It's going to cost 15 billion dollars. We can charge an import tarriff of X % or raise taxes by 2 %, YOU make the choice.". No more sayiing that we're going to DO things and not put a price tag on it and try and sneak tax hiles in AFTER the fact. People WANT government services and NEED those services BUT they ALSO need to know how much GETTING those services is going to cost them, up front, so that THEY can decide for themselves if the price tag is WORTH the added tax burden. When a tax is snuck in after the fact, folks percieve it as nothing but politicians trying to steal more money from them. No, folks need to know what the added services are going to cost them up front and in NO unequivocable terms either.
If a leader is going to commit America to a Treaty or to a WAR, then ALL the available informatin needs to be put onto the table for ALL to see. No more hiding behind statements like we have SECRET Intelligence about XYZ and we need to fight to protect you. Tell us what the darn threat is and let US determine whether or not the propsosed loss of life is worth that move.

I agree that the issue could well be the message rather than the product.
Bush won each of the last two elections with a rather simple proposition. 2000 - pay a lot less tax. 2004 - the world is dangerous but I will keep you safe by fighting those who would harm you.
We have seen that the product behind each of these messages has failed. We are paying less tax - but are deep in the hole as a result. We are fighting those who would harm us - but not showing great signs of being able to end that fighting soon (and before cons launch at me about wanting to surrender - I want to win - and a war is only won when the fighting stops). But the message was clear and sellable.
That's what the Dems have to do - not just in the South but all over the country.
For instance a better healthcare system means cheaper more reliable healthcare for all and a healther more productive workforce. Hence it means more jobs.

That's a great analogy and you might have something there, but no matter what we will see a male-democrat win in 2008. And, however again, it won't be Kucinich, not Senor Richardson, and not Rodham, as the South is not simple-minded, they are no nonsense rather. The Republicans on the other hand, can't cut the mustard in this election, it is fairly sad.

the elections are closer than people think in the south -I think if dems push the right hot buttons that they could easily pull out some victories in the south but they dont -they havent got anything to offer -so the south doesnt buy -and with amnesty for illegals and them competing for jobs with them in construction while working for lower wages because the majority of their manufacturing jobs went overseas -and the housing boom is slowing where a lot of people found new work when factories closed -I really cant see them flipping the other way for now unless something changes
