SQD - Just because a PhD isn't a medical degree, doesn't mean it's fake!!
To be honest, you have to be pretty dedicated to doing your PhD. The upsides are that you become a part of the department and you make actual friends with the tutors and lecturers as well as being able to go to them for advice etc. One of the downsides to doing this degree is that you can have periods of gloom (I'm doing history and have heard this as the workload gets tough at times etc), but with the right support you will be able to cope. I think you could also go out and have fun as well but it can take organising to do that!
None of us can answer whether you can do one or not as we don't know your personality etc. Only you could answer that question. But it's only 3 years out of your life and the rewards are worth it. :-) Good luck.

Undoubtedly a lot of work but what do you want to do with it? Become an academic? Then I imagine it would have some use or if you, say, do a scientific PhD and go into the oil industry for example, or the chemical industry etc.

If you want fun -- get an MBA.
Passing the written and oral preliminary PhD exams can be stressful. I dind't find much else stressful, though. Once past the exams, I treated writing my dissertation like a job. I set deadlines and met them.

Depends on the area of study, school, department, and your own personal commitment and interests. It can range from impossibly hard to just about anything. In other words, the answer is way too complex to answer with the little bit of information you provide here. A more important question is this: what do YOU want to do with your life, and what are you willing to do to accomplish it?

my husband got one and it was killer...pharmaceutical sciences, grueling, intense, research, writing, grants, thesis, dissertation
MD/PHDs are FAKE PhDs like they want to tag on the label but they in no way do the same work that real PhDs do, they can't possibly in that amount of time--
What this means is that an MD alone is realistic, a Ph.D. alone is realistic, but to cram the two together in less time than it takes for a person to earn a Ph.D. alone is what is "fake".
