Today, I saw a woman that I am guessing was in her middle 20's driving in the left lane of a 40 mph speed limit two lane road going 50mph with BOTH hands off the wheel while she was doing her hair. In astonishment I passed her and I looked in my rear view mirror and she was on a cellphone. I am not sure if she was on the cellphone while she had both hands tending to her hair but I certainly would not rule that out.
Has anybody seen women do this before, driving on a straight-away with both hands fixing their hair and only adjusting the steering wheel every so often when she started to drift off the road instead of just waiting for a red light?

Thank You for the answers. People are saying that some people can drive with their knees and be in control of their car. But this woman(being nice by calling her that) had both hands in her hair and was adjusting the wheel everytime she felt she was starting to swerve meaning she was not using her knees and she somehow was on a cellphone at the same time to boot.
What is this world coming to???

I also want to add that I live in New York State on Long Island where cellphone use while driving is supposed to be against the law. Although it still seems that the people on cellphones outnumber the people that are not using them while driving.

Yes, I have....unfortunately it was the last conscious act she ever committed on this Earth. Earlier this year, a woman driving Northbound on the Henry Hudson Parkway just south of the NYC Line (near the Saw Mill River Parkway) was doing just this.
She took her hands off the wheel (so she could put on her eyeliner), as she did so, the roadway veered to the left, she kept going to the right. At this point she drove completely off the roadway and into a tree. She expired at the hospital.
The official explanation of death on the accident report was labeled as the generic "driver inattention" - which really doesn't do any justice to the carelessness of her action.

No need to focus your attention to women's inattention and carelessness while driving.
I have seen drivers of both genders, all ethnic groups, all ages doing many things, other than driving while behind the wheel of a car.
I have seen people reading newspapers, doing crossword puzzles, turning around to scold children, groom their dogs, clean their glasses, dipping chicken nuggets, kissing their girl/boyfrriends and many other dangerous activities while in a moving vehicle.
To ask what the world is coming to, just because you saw A woman fixing her hair on the highway is to miss the point of why ANY such activity is risky, to the driver and to anyone else who may be injured or killed as a result.
Driving a motor vehicle should be a full-time activity, demanding the FULL attention of the operator. The legislations that ban cell phone use barely BEGIN to address the issue. ANY activity that CAN distract the driver should be made unlawful.
Did you know that German automobile manufacturers of high performance cars do NOT put in cup holders on cars made for their domestic use? Only those cars slated for export to other countries have this feature.
I am also reading, with utter disbelief, the other responses, here. A person claims to be a super good driver, because she can drive with her knees? (because MOMMY said it might be necessary?) Another, who's brother asks her to steer the car for him because he wants to do something else with his hands?
Clearly, SOME people are in a state of denial.

See.... i have several things wrong with this story... but not what you think.
a) Why is it that people intentionally get into the left lane to slow down the rest of us!?! Its called the fast lane for a reason. And if are in the fast lane, and someone is barralling up your tailpipe... move over!
b)Why is it when people pick up a cellphone they IMMEDIATELY take their foot off the gas, and drop 15mph?? Is it impossible to do both things at the same time?? If you are on the phone and notice people passing you and you know they are cursing you through their pane of glass, the space between cars, and your glass... Hang up and DRIVE!!
c) ok... the 3rd thing my mother taught me when driving (after clutch and parrallel parking) was how to drive with my knee. Sometimes the time comes when you need both hands. I'm not defending the twit on the phone, but know that some of us are capable of not using our hands and being totally in control (I can parrallel park with my knees... dont ask how i figured that out)

Actually, I have seen more men trying to do two things at once (neither being driving) while behind the wheel. Eating, talking on the cell, describing something with their hands etc.

It's men, too. I saw a man on a cell phone in his left hand, while eating a sandwich in his right. I guess he was driving with his....knees?

It's not just women. People do all kinds of stupid things while they're driving. Unfortunately, as long as it's not against the law, they're doing nothing wrong. Until they crash into you.
