I'm a student nurse and have been asked to think about this question. So, what is your perception of a nurse? Why do you think that way?

Peoples perception' ? We are all different we all have different perceptions!
Being a pervert I think of a nurse in nylons giving me 'release' from whatever, (a source of comfort if you like).
Some folk may think a nurse is some one along the lines of Florence Nighting Gale ?
From all I have read about that woman she was far removed from the Lady of the lamp, she was a dictatorial know nothing, with friends in high places.
As a recent patient in the UK hospital system I can honestly say that nurses are the salt of the earth, they all have a great sense of humor while doing a job I couldnt possibly do! The money they are on is not good enough!
They did refuse to discuss the question of nylons , and asked me if I felt fit enough for a smack around the face, but apart from that I thought they were all great.

My initial perception of nurses are that they are "assistants" to doctors and do the menial tasks that a busy doctor doesn't have time for. It's just my personal experience when I go on a doctors visit: the nurse will weigh/measure me, take my blood pressure, etc. but seeing the doctor is why I initially made the visit anyway.

However, that perception has drastically changed since my best friend entered a nursing program (to get her R.N and Masters degree). I didn't realize the extent of her training and that she takes care of so much more at the hospital setting!

Ok, this is from personal experience but the majority of the nurses that i have dealt with (spent 4 months in hospital) seem to be disheartened with the job, patients can sense this and it all adds to heightened tension from being in hospital in the first place. And although i have nothing against immigration it would really help a patient who is often scared and stressed if the nurses and any care giver was able to speak clear English just so they can reassure a patient. No to say that all nurses are like this.

I am a male psyche nurse. I like veins and poop. I have worked as a nurse in Japan before - being a male nurse there was strange also, being white there was a bit strange.

You will love nursing!

Have a great time!

I truly believe some nurses are born to nurse
and are excellent at their job. However other nurses like the uniform, and make rotten nurses.

I think of nurses as the "real" doctors. They're the ones that actually take care of the sick after the doctor has done their work.

Nurses are perceived are caring, nurturing people,,willing to help others in the most "gross" situations..they are understanding and helpful ...and are there to calm you when the doctor in unavailable...to just hold your hand if that is what you need...

I think this way because it has been in my experience that all this is true

I think they do a grand job. I think they are underpaid and undervalued. I couldn't mop up sick and spend all day with poorly people on the pay they are given. I think it is very admirable that you want to do that though, good on you. I only wish I had the strength to do something like that.
