A musician has just as much right to voice his/her opinion as anyone else. They should be aware, however, that people can be very attached to their own viewpoints and may express their disagreement by not buying CDs, concert tickets, etc.

There are far better things to discuss than just plugging the new perfume, CD, fashion line, movie, or whatever product is hitting the shelves.
If a celebrity can create awareness and publicity for something selfless, it should be encouraged.
But in the instance of The Dixie Chicks, for example, an off hand remark should not have resulted in so much scandal. It's not like they went on a whole tirade against the President: it was a light quip that the press exhausted beyond reasonable reaction.
What happened to them was a terrible shame and made the American public seem ruthless and tyrannical.

I think as public citizens, they have a right and a duty to express their beliefs and opinions. But they also need to respect the forum - political and social commentary has a proper time and place.
appropriate forums for expressing opinions:
-magazine article
-song, book, or movie written by the artist
-biographical interview
inappropriate:
-acceptance speech at an awards ceremony
-appearance in ad/show/commercial/plug/spot promoting a company/show/event that is not owned or run by the artist

No one should "Shut Up" just because they are celebrities.
Yet they should know that more will hear their words and may reap steeper repercussions if what they say is disagreeable to the public.
Example: The Dixie Chicks had every right to express their feelings in the public forum . . . but they should have known that "Freedom of Speech" goes BOTH ways.
No one has the right to "Not have their feelings hurt".

yes and no Artists have one of the biggest platforms to stand on and "preach" and reach a broad audience of people around the world. But knowing this I wish most of them actually would know what they are preaching about before they open thier mouths. They could make things worse or make themselves look stupider then they do already. My personal opinoin is I dont care as long as when I'm at a concert they dont do it there.

Why? Nothing is wrong with anybody sharing their opinion. If you don't want to hear it, turn the channel or turn it off!
Anyone can say anything they want but nobody is required to listen to them.
