Try keeping it simple and sophisticated and buy pieces that can mix and match well with each other. That will optimize your wardrobe and prevent you from looking to "trendy." Which basically means next year the same clothes will lok tacky you will want to replace them.
There are overstock and discount stores like TJ Max and Marshalls that sell brand names as discount prices. You can find lots of nice things there as long as you don't mind wearing stuff that may be last years style. Another source would be eBay or other online auction sites. Just make sure you do your research and know what the items goes for retail so you don't get burned. And keep an eye on the newspaper circulars for closeout bargains at the local department stores.

Buy well-made, classic clothes at resale shops, consignment stores or even ebay. The prices are much lower and higher end garments are usually well taken care of. If need be, buy just one or two key pieces of quality clothing-like a good blazer or simple black dress. These items can be used for many different outfits, will be in style for a long time, and are a better choice than 4 or 5 cheaper, trendy items.

yes, and this is something that just kills me....match. LOOK IN THE MIRROR and ask yourself a few questions like 1. Is any extra skin overlapping my pants(does it fit). 2. do the colors go together. say you have a navy pair of pants and a lime green shirt, would you wear those two in public? or a paisley shirt with big polka dot pants? 3. Am I 50 trying to wear a miniskirt and tube top(refer to 1.) basically theres nothing supporting your rear or your "girls".
Go shop at Goodwill or Factory Outlet Malls and my favorite Clearance racks. Just keep your eyes open but don't be obsessive about it. The get a few good pieces advice is nuts. I don't want to wear the few good pieces every other day...ok once a week. Doesn't sit well. Just be honest with yourself about how a piece of clothing looks on you and does it hide those square hips and the bladder that seems to have its own area code(description of myself and hope being honest is going to help). It's painful to not be at least a 7 anymore.

Well i would say buy base items, like a few REALLY good pairs of jeans that you look and feel great in, or a gorgeous pair of shoes, then as the fashion changes you can kinda buy little things to go with them.
For example i seem to see that deep shade of blue everywhere now, so if you have your great jeans, buy a blue top in that shade everyones wearing, and maybe some accessories, rather then updating your clothes everytime fashion changes.
Also if your in the uk, shops like h & m have nice clothes and not bad prices, just shop around and avoid cheap looking clothes.
I really hope i helped! Good Luck :)

Don't waste money on trendy items. I would stick to the classics from the Gap or like stores and wear trendy accessories purchased from Target or Claire's. Also watch out for impulse buys. Think about a purchase for a day or two and if you still really want it then go back and make the buy. Sometimes I find when I go back to the store for the buy it wasn't as I had remembered and don't make the purchase.

If my guy is slicing the grass or engaged on the motor vehicle, he likes to placed on the main tattered clothing he has, he's no longer project-free on clothing and he can harm a pair of denims or a great blouse without even attempting. So i've got found out to stay with that. yet as quickly as we pass someplace, the place you're required to placed on a tie, then i desire him to look extremely tremendous. scent stable... be freshly shaved, the works.

clothse: DOTS, Charlotte Russe, Fergies Studio, and stores like Marshalls and Ross are really good too for when your on a budget! Try to stay away from like Saks or Dillards though, they occasionally have those monster sales that make everything 70 % off, but those racks of business suits that are "only" $499.99 are super tempting so just stay clear away from there!
Cosmetics: Sally's beauty Co. has absolutely everything for hair/nails/cosmetics/everything and the prices are pretty low too. also, believe it or not that store Big Lots has some really good make up too. Just stay away from their concealer because little kids like to open them and who knows what their putting in them. oh and like CVs/Walgreens/etc. they all ways have sales and buy-one-get-one-free make up

I'm a college student and have to deal with the same problem. I like discount department stores like Ross, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls. If you have a Plato's Closet in your area it's a great second hand store.
Splurge on items you can wear with multiple outfits (boots, jackets, jeans) skimp on items you can only wear every so often (shirts, jewerly).
Layer shirts...it can give them a whole new look.

Wal-mart actually has some very stylish and cheap clothing! I have bought plenty of shirts AND shoes from there! Definately buy cosmetics from Wal-mart!
If you get at least one pair of brown and black pants that can go A Long way!
Also Kohls has some cheap clothes too. I have tons of clothes from there!

a lot of the supermodels look fabulous just wearing jeans and a white t-shirt (but they have a fabulous bag or belt.) then again there are wonderful fakes around.
so one workaround is to have a sort of 'uniform' and buy less things, but better ones. i.e. like one great pair of jeans, not three cheap pairs - or one great pair of shoes not twelve cheap looking ones. a more 'classic' looking style is sort of longer-lasting.
if your style is more trend-based then you can buy those sort of trend items i.e. bright yellow or fluoro green item that you wear cause it's in one season and then throw away because you don't wanna see that colour again for ten years.
so you buy them cheap in places like target and k-mart and so on and combine with your 'classic' pieces so that you still look edgy and this season. some of the items from these cheap stores are actually wearable, BUT they tend to not last very well, like they bag, pill, fade, and so on. ironing your clothes well even if they are t-shirt material, and using spray starch can make cheaper things look better (this is how they do it for their catalogue shoots!).
makeup, well there are plenty of places to buy that cheap, i think you can save money on buying the cheaper lipsticks, nailpolish and mascaras, but i would say don't skimp on foundation (go up to a sort of revlon price level) because the cheaper foundations look baaaaaad and cake and do all sorts of nasty things.
