Yes. I spent all my childhood in Scouts, and all my adult life hiking in the woods. I usually carry in my backpack or with me a knife, a compass and topo map, matches and lighter, an eight foot long warspear that doubles as a staff, a short sword, small hatchet, energy bars, lightweight rope, maglite with xtra batteries, a nylon tarp, water purification tablets, 10 feet of plastic tubing, a signal mirror, and a waterproof emergency blanket. I usually wear knee high snake boots, denim pants, a lightweight shirt, and leather Roman armor. Yes, armor. It keeps thorns and thistles away and protects my torso in case of a fall. For food I would definitely only hunt small game, like squirrel and rabbit because I would have no way of keeping the meat from spoiling. Making a fire is simple enough, but never build one in a cave or under overhanging trees. Do make your fire in sheltered areas away from direct wind. As for a place to sleep you need to make a raised platform of branches and pine boughs in order to keep you off the ground and away from groundwater or runoff. If you have no tarp you can make a serviceable lean-to out of branches and pine boughs that should keep you relatively dry, but for serious downpours you should find an overhanging rock face or cave. Most of your body heat is lost by ground contact and through your head. Any food you do have should never be kept in camp, as it will attract animals. Tie it up in a tree at least 500 feet from where you sleep so you do not become the focus of a hungry bear. Find a source of fresh water and follow it downstream - remember that water always leads to civilization. Do not trust the old adage about moss on the north sides of trees - moss grows anywhere there is adequate moisture and sunlight. Finally, if you are not confident about walking out, stay put and make yourself as visible as possible. Someone will find you.

Sure, after the bad old days overseas in the late 60's early 70's and I had gotten out of the service, I lived in Yellowstone Nat'l Park for almost two years. I found that there have been people living up there since before this country was as large as it is now. And I would say there are probably about twenty to twenty-five people living there that the forest rangers don't even know about.

1. I would not GET lost in the woods in the first place.
2. If I DID find myself semi-lost, I think I could make myself survive long enough to be FOUND... thus... I would
3. STAY WHERE I AM
4. Make as many large "visible" signals as to my presence there as I could
5. make shelter as best as possible, find water.
6. WAIT until I am rescued.

Of course I would, I'd walk to the top of the nearest hill, and turn to face the sun in the north, then I'd carefully get out my mobile phone and call triple-0
(I'm in Australia)

No ! I'm the type who prefers wall to wall carpet and neon signs. Oh, air conditioning. I really don't want to go near the woods.

No, I don't, to be honest. But I think if I had a hatchet, flint, matches, fishing gear, and a gun, I'd do ok.
