My opinion.
A military confrontation between the two largest nuclear powers would indeed destroy a "small chunk" on the world. Russia is surrounded by NATO so they would be knocked out. The U.S. will be crippled and the new world order will settle around India or Australia (no doubt Europe and China would be drawn in or "automatically" targeted).
No refrences, just my honest insight.

Don't worry about a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia. If a third world war is to happen, it won't be anything like humanity has ever seen before. There won't be a shot fired. The whole thing will be over with in just a matter of a few hours. Control, victory, or total annihilation will be based upon silent invisible killing RF energy fields, and other so called nonlethal directed energy systems. One aspect of these most effective killing fields is "electronically enhanced psychokinesis -- a category of psychoelectronics. Russia has the lead in developing this technology. The U.S. has been developing their own versions since the end of WW-II. Both sides think nothing of testing these classified weapon technologies on their own citizens, in the name of homeland security of course. This is a fact. This technology is based upon some very advanced physics, like "entanglement," and quantum holographics, as well as quantum consciousness. Using this kind of technology, it is possible to select (tune into) any number of people in a population or, just a single individual; and electronically, remotely, stimulate conditions like heart-falure. Because of the nature of the system, no physical evidence is left behind to be traced. That is just a hint at what and how the next world war will be fought.

It will be the end of the world. The Russian military has fallen into such a sorry state in the last 15 years that the only war they could effectively fight would be a nuclear war.

A cold war is a war that is fought without firing a shot.
Russia has no chance against the US, so no it would not be the end of the world.

Probably not, but it could be devastating nonetheless. Russia is not likely to strike directly at the US, but to act through intermediaries or strike at US allies it can reach (such as Israel). It's not likely that Putin actually wants a conflict; he'd rather increase Russian influence to improve access to resources, which means in effect persuading the US to stay away from them.

I am 50/50 on any nukes being used in the conflict, no one wants the world to end is what would happen if they used them. In a traditional conflict, casualties would be terrible but the world would not end! Lets hope the crazy politicians dont let it happen!

The didn't call it MAD for nothing. A mere 100 megatons of yield (1% of the world's arsenals) is enough to cause global impact winter...the threshold is very low.

A nuclear exchange will no doubt ruin everyone's day. As one poster stated, the Russian military is in a sorry state. Well, not quite. They have fielded new, improved and more accurate ICBM systems, not to mention aircraft/bombers, improved electronics, accuracy of their ICBM's. Please, don't dismiss them as having a bunch of scrap metal.
