I volunteered to return to active duty with the Navy from the Retired List three days after the attack on America. Sadly, the current law prohibits such an action past age 60, with the exception of physicians and certain general and flag officers.

I would have had a criminal investigation at the scene immediately following those tragic events of 911. If it was determined that OBL was proven to be behind these acts, I would have done the same thing as far as attacking Afghanistan and remained there until their safe haven was gone and OBL was captured or dead. I would have made sure the poppy fields were eradicated because that is, no doubt, what funds their escapades.
I would have used the normal procedures within our government to initiate some of the surveillance programs now in use and had language inserted that somehow gave U.S. citizens some protections of their rights. I would have had some serious diplomacy with neighboring countries in the Middle East to avoid further confrontations or panic reactions from them.
I would not have attacked Iraq unless, for some reason, it became unavoidable. I would have worked with other countries as a huge intelligence network to weed out terrorists globally. I would definitely not have initiated a unilateral global "war on terror" which gave OBL the significance he so craved.

I would have quickly told the American people how much I regretted the lives lost that day and reminded them that as frightening as terrorism seems, it is because our advisaries can not take on our military head on, but rather must launch these underhanded attacks against unarmed civilians. I would behind the scenes deploy special forces, not the mainstream military to track down those responsible. I would apologize for not doing more to prevent terrorism, because I knew since the Oklahoma City bombing, that terrorism was the most likely threat to our country. I think reconfiguring our mainstream military to fight terrorism is shortsighted. I also think putting five (including the one I was on) of our twelve aircraft carriers off Pakistan after 9/11 was belittling of the might those ships should represent. It speaks volumes to fascades and apeasing the american people instead of acting logically. We are showing the real world powers a side of us that looks weak, because we are fighting a never ending war that can't be won, only contained. Just as the war on crime, the war on drugs, the war on poverty are all not real wars, the war on terrorism is not a real war. It is frightening that we have allowed the word "war" to be misused so many times in history to emphasize how passionate someone was to stopping something, that the Bush administration was able to slitheringly slip that word into the context of fighting terrorism. Now society's acceptance of the misuse of a word has undenyable implications. Terrorism is the worst possible criminal act, but it is still a criminal act. It is only an act of war if a government organizes it, not harbors it. The gray areas are what special forces are there for.

oh this should open a can of worms. ..... i am "one of those" who believes the US knew well in advance that 9/11 was going to happen and by who. I also believe the current disaster GW has made in the middle east has nothing to do with it.
I do know the morning of 9/11.....because I do vividly recall where I was & what I was doing......I knew it was going to change the world forever. I think there is a lot we don't know or ever will. I think too many American lives have been lost in this tragedy....both in the event of 9/11 and the subsequent war it created. I think the troops who survive will never be the same. I think they were made to do things they will struggle with forever. I think it's disgraceful.
What would I have done? If I were a leader, I sure as hell wouldn't have made such a mess of things. I would have brought justice to those who deserved it. I would have declared sept 11 a national day of mourning so that we DON'T forget....because you're right...we shouldn't.....and we should always keep in the back of our minds, it could happen again.

Ascertained who was behind it and strike back, thus most likely an invasion of Afghanistan.
You don't even need to be American to be thinking the same thing - most of the close allies and friends of the United States who kept out of Iraq later on were eager to help and did indeed do so - France, Germany and Canada included.
Invading Iraq, on the other hand, is a different matter. It certainly doesn't hurt to check if they had any hand at all in 9/11, but the tests came back negative, so...

Create new one strike law, if a foreigner is ever convicted of any crime within 3 years of arriving or any major crime anytime there after he should be immediately deported back to his country. No jail term, no trial just rapid ejection. This will be an excellent policy for cleansing the nations populations of undesireable garbage. If your not with America get the F home!

We did the right thing by going into Afghanistan. Al Queda had training camps there and they were being protected by the Taliban. Iraq, of course, was a completely different story. It amazes me how many people still believe that Saddam was involved in 9/11 when George Bush himself has said that he was not involved.

Launch a world foreign policy effort to profit from support of world opinion and immediately gone after Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan. My response would only be with Special Forces with support of the 101st and 82nd Airborne and coordinate with the British SAS and kill Osama Bin Laden and all his supporters.
Thanks

I would have stayed focused on capturing Osama Bin Laden and destroying Al Qaeda. This means that I would not have gone into Iraq.

I would have paid attention to the intelligence for once, invest in American infrastructure and port and border security, and would have easily tracked down Bin Laden with our superior intelligence.
