People talk about overpopulation all the time. It's easy to do anything about it, though, because controlling population means either a) killing large numbers of people, or b) coercing peoples reproductive choices in even greater numbers - both of which are morally unacceptable.
However, there has been a documented trend for fertility to fall as nations enter a highly developed, post-industrial economy. This has happened in America, Europe, Japan, and even Russia. If that trend holds as the rest of the world develops economically, it is likely that population will eventualy stabilize. Whether it stabilizes 'in time' of course, is another question.

The problem will sort itself out; overpopulation tends to result in famine, disease, war and thus a whole lot of death, reducing the population and correcting the problem.

Many people will insist there is no such thing as overpopulation and that we should be having more children than we can possibly afford. That's the thing I don't understand.

Because no one has the right to mandate reproductivity. Some people/countries/religions might think they have that right but they don't. It's inhumane. If you feel that strongly about overpopulation, either don't have any kids or adopt.
