I surmise that China might have surpassed the U.S. and the world's economic superpower. Other pacific rim countries ... Korea, Japan, Singapore wil become major economic players. I'm not sure if India is technically considered a Pacific Rim country, but certainly they will also make great economic gains.
Modern U.S. foreign policy may have alienated the rest of the world to the extent, that American exports are shunned in protest. In addition to that, China is currently seeking to enhance the quality and safety of their exports. If they can do that, add you also take into account the low prices of their products, then they will easily surpass the U.S. as the world's economic superpower.
Chavez in Venzuela, Not a friend of America, may divert most if not all of his country's oil to China ... because they can pay more and because he doesn't like the U.S. I believe that in South America, Venzuela and Brazil will rise dramatically in rankings due to their resources.
In the Middle East, Saudia Arabia will always continue their reign as a powerful nation due to their their huge reserves of oil.
Britian is always a strong partner to the U.S., but that also decreases their power and influence.
I think that Russia will become less of a power, because it seems that they are slipping more and more into capitalist corruption with no strong central laws to fight the corruption and diminishing government control. Even though Russia remains strong, I think this will also make them an unstable and dangerous nation as they continue to compete with the West in various ways.
China likewise will be dangerous the West ... because they hold such an economic grip on U.S. ... They currently are floating a bank note on much of this country, compliments of the current administration.
So to avoid further ramblings, my specualtions for the top 5 powers from an economic and political stanpoint in the year 2020 are:
1. China
2. U.S.
3. Saudia Arabia
4. Countries of the European Union
5. India
Others: Russia, Venzuela, Brazil, Singapore, Japan
That's assuming we all survive that long of course

Many nations will combine to form a few super-nations on the way to one Government OF all People BY all People and FOR all People. By then (and probaly about AD2012) Canada and USA and Mexico will be a N. America super-nation, and also there will be the EU supernation. Shiite Islam countries may be one super-nation by 2020. Israel will be in greater trouble if it still is there then. Giving up "their" occupied Palestinian lands for peace is the only wise solution for them -- will they?
The one country at the "top of the world" will still be the Arctic Continent, and by 2020 the whole world will be headed into a global freezing period, as the very high solar (sun) energy output is now almost fully peaked -- this is the real cause of some (not serious) global warming. With the USA political election season coming on strong, the air will continue to get more hot ! Ha ha
Doesn't all of that sound interesting? A old Chinese "curse" is "May you live an interesting life !" Ha ha
It really doesn't matter what temporary human governments evolve here; The Most High Celestial Sons under our Sovereign Creator Son of God Jesus Christ Michael now rule the political destiny here. Eventually (maybe in 500 to 3000 more years) there will be one Jesusonian Theocratic and Democratic world government with one English languge, one fully mixed Human race, one supernal philosophy and one Jesusonian Christian religion ! This is God's will and thus it can not be stopped by any mere men or women any more than our solar system could be maintained WITHOUT physical gravity ! Our Father God's Spirit Gravity is even infinitely stronger to lovingly draw us all into eventually doing his perfect will !
Peace and progress,
Brother Dave, a Jesusonian Christian Truthist

Africa will be the new Middle East.
New Texas (the country formed by the secession of the sunbelt states along I-10) will be applying for entry into the North Atlantic Euramerican Union, but will be having problems since it will be the last country enforcing civil justice instead of the honor system.
A new bill will be passed stating that persons with an IQ of less than 80 should not be discriminated against when running for office and that votes for the challenged should count twice - leaving the Senate and House in much the same condition as they are today.
North Korea will have had a series of nuclear testing ACCIDENTS that will have left the country virtually uninhabitable.
House Speaker Dakota Fanning will propose a new minimum wage of $36 per hour and a maximum salary cap for physicians of $39 per hour. (The Fed will print enough currency to make up the difference.)
Israel will own the exclusive rights to all major telecom companies in the Northern Hemisphere.
Canada will recognize Spanish as their 3rd national language since French and English speaking nationals will be a minority due to Mexican immigration.
The ancient Persian Empire will be the protectorate state of Shell with the capital of Petrolpolis.
Japan will purchase Siberia for $50,000.
Columbia won't seem like such a bad place to raise a family.

I don't think you are really going to get an answer for this.
Why?
Because no one knows, or will even hazard a guess. Too many things can take place in the blink of an eye. Look at 9/11.
People are concerned with the present and the near future, not 12 years from now. Right now the main concern people have is the Middle East.
Though I think I can safely say that Britain will still be a great ally of ours.
Sorry if that isn't what you are looking for.

The world is controlled by bankers and industrialists who crave nothing more than a one world gov't. By 2020 the North American Union will have been established, and the United Staes will be a region of the union. China will belong to the Asian Union, and I expect by then Russia will be part of the European union. After that it will only be a matter of time till the whole world is under a single fascist gov't controlled by the wealthy elitists.

U.S.A.,Russia-CIS,China,The European Union,India? I'm not sure about the other powers. I also heard about the African Union and the South American community as well.I think by 2020,certainly by 2030 say, the global will be divided between Multi-National E.U. type Superstates and maybe a few large nation-states along sides!

By 2020 you won't be dealing with any individual European country anymore, all dealings will probably be with the EU, a potential economic and military superpower. However, make no mistake the EU and the US will also be allies no matter what. We may have our disagreements on certain things but we two together are a formidable force on the world stage, I definitely say more so than any Sino-Russian alliance.

China, Russia, Japan, Iran and some other country which is not in NATO. Regretfully by 2020 US will be defeated by Iran in US-Iran war and will cease to exist as an empire. British and others will get their share as well.
