I have a 3.1 G.P.A. and I am ranked 147 out of 299 in my class. (49%). My SAT scores was a 480 in math, 450 in Reading, and 500 in Wrting. I also am a three season athlete and a member of the Student Council and Deca Clubs. Also, I have volunteered to help mentally challenged kids and worked at numerous track camps. I have written letters that have made magazines/newspapers (Usa Today, Boston Herald, Sports Illustrated) and I am eventually going to write sports articles for my town's newspaper as an intern. If I sent all this to college, how would I be looking? Also, any ideas for college choices in the New England area?

Sounds like you are definately on the right track-you have a strong GPA and a great resume regarding your extracurriculars. I know that they recently changed the way that the SAT was scored, and that there is a new highest score-you should check with each individual college to see whether your scores fit within their requirements (each university/college has their own SAT score requirements). I think you look great on paper which is important. One thing I would definately recommend-if the colleges you apply to offer an essay option, definatley do it. It sounds like you are a great writer, and this would give you a chance to show off those skills, and possibly help you gain admission, or even help you earn a scholarship.
Note on scholarships-because so many scholarships go to students with GPA's of 3.5 and above, you should definatley focus on extracurricular focused scholarships to help you pay for school. Many scholarships include an essay as part of the application process, and it seems like you would excell in this area.
Good luck!!!

I do not mean this as a put-down.

Everything about you screams AVERAGE. You have average grades, average SAT scores, average rank in class and average activities.

The good news is that average students can get into a good college and do very well in life. The top schools are out for you -- but some decent schools (especially public universities) are real possibilities for you.

Good luck.

Well that depends on what college you're trying to get into...
