Im still in high school and I am a second year senior. I messed up last year pretty bad, but I have matured and lately I have been thinking hard on what I want to do with my future career. My plan for college is 2 years in community college then two years in a university. I am going to be graduating at the end of this year. And I am scared that Im not going to know what I want to do in college then never go. I have looked at so many options and nothing really interests me. Will it just come to me what I want to do? Or is there anything I can do to help find out?? Maybe talk to my high school counsler. Thanks.

You should take a career aptitude test. Your guidance counselor can probably give you one. It will ask you questions about what you like doing, and come up with some careers you might be good at and enjoy.

Also, you should consider whether college or a trade school might be better for you. Too many young people without any real interest in school go to college because they think it's the only path to a good job. Trade schools are also great paths to good jobs.

If your high school counselor has left you alone until now, it's hard to imagine that he or she has anything helpful to say to you now, but it's a free service and you might as well take advantage of it. As for as many interest inventories and personality checks as the school has, and ask about online ones also. If nothing is jumping out at you, it's probably because you haven't seen the job you want yet.

Go to the library and look at any edition of What Color is Your Parachute. Try to answer the questions about where you want to work--inside, outside, alone, with a few people, with many people, whether with objects, people or ideas; how much responsibility you want. That will give you a good starting point.

With a lack of direction and the skills you're showing, 2 years of community college and 2 years in a university will not see you graduated. Only about 15% of people can pull that off, and I'm betting they had a better grasp of English spelling and grammar than your question reflects. Take English composition--there's no college major that isn't made easier if you can write and few jobs that don't require more of it than most people thought.

hey don't worry about what your major is, its just the fact that you are in college that will matter. I am a senior in college and I still have no idea what I want to do with my degree. I went to community college for two years before university and its a great start, and during that time you can explore different things that might interest you. Even when you transfer if you are still unsure you can try a Liberal Arts major, and that kinda gives you a sampling of everything.

The most important thing is that you continue to work hard and go to college. Often times people have careers that have nothing to do with what their majors in college were, so don't sweat it too much, pick something that interests you.

Hope that helped, have a great last year in HS!

Everyone goes through the " I don't know stage" when it comes to college. I think that you going to a community college first is a great idea, especially if you are not sure what you would like to do yet. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to explore different academic areas. You'll have to take General Studies and usually half way through that's when you realize that one of the courses you are taking seems interesting. JC's offer a lot of different classes that even if you don't decide to transfer to a 4yr, you can still get an AA or certificate in something you like to do. Talk to your high school counselor and a counselor at the JC that you will be going to. You never know, something that you like to do as a hobby, you may be able to study it at college. Good luck!!

Have you, or can you take an aptitude test? Your school counselor should have access to an aptitude test and you might find that helpful in determining your best direction. Also, look at what classes you have enjoyed and felt you had a knack for previously. What do you like to do for fun? I bet there is a career there somewhere. Its a time of major growth and change for you. I understand the fear, but if you will move in the direction of what you love, the fear will go away. It really works! I suggest just start jotting down what you love doing. For now, don 't filter it, just write. You can filter it later as to whether or not there is a possible career. Start with just writing down what you love. Follow the love and you'll be fine.

you can talk to your high school counselor or go to the community college and take an aptitude test. it will determine your strengths and weaknesses so you have a better idea of what you might be good at. you don't have to decide right away. take different classes that might not help with a major, but sound interesting anyway. think about what you like to do and see if that can help with a career.

Get a job. Then go to college when you become interested in something.
