Hedwig and the Angry Inch?

When HW and Tommy Gnosis part they become one. Right?
So, was HW Tommy all the time. I know I shouldn't look too hard into it but I'm trying to make sense of the ending.

No.. Tommy is Tommy.. when they part at the end it signifies that Hedwig has learned that he doesn't need anyone else.. he is whole as he is.. ("he" is used due to the fact that he has torn away the female wig makeup and such.. but I believe it would have been a case where he is still in the middle.. he just doesn't feel the need to choose one side.. I just didn't want to do the he/she bit)
