I don't want to become paranoid about all the attention China-made products are getting (ie, pet food, food poisoning, there was that recent Mattel recall for toys that had too much lead), but I also want to be smart about the things I buy. The long term effects add up. Opinions/info??

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal about a week ago that had to do with the Chinese buying and recycling used computer parts. Evidently they extract the lead and use it to make cheap costume jewelry. A lot of this stuff has been recalled because the lead content is dangerous to the wearer.

You may need to go completely green and crunchy Annabel. For example, only shopping at fair trade stores, or Trader Joe's or wholefoods, etc. For example, there is the store Ten Thousand Villages, across from Borders. At Costplus you may be able to find things not made in China, or maybe purchasing your clothing at small boutiques rather than at large department stores like Target and Walmart, since I know you shop at Walmart all the time. It will be a matter of choosing alternative stores, and starting a Revolution. Viva La Annabel.

Its really sad, China has tried real hard to develop economically but they seem to have a problem with quality control. So...avoid anything that could possibly have a poison problem, no foods, nothing with paint on it, obviously no pet foods either. You even have to be careful about clothing, it might be flammable, it might have dangerous chemicals in it. I wish China all the luck in the world, but they really need to clamp down on their quality control issues.
