Barrack Obama has the same motivation as any of the other Presidential nominees. Power, and fame.
He reminds me of Bill Clinton, he is very egoistic, and thinks he is G-ds gift to women from the adds he is running, so I would include "Interns" as a motivation.

If you really wish to know, his recent(ish) book is called "The Audacity of Hope", and it's quite available.
Here's a little clip I liked:
"Not so far beneath the surface, I think, we are becoming more, not less, alike.
I don't mean to exaggerate here, to suggest that pollsters are wrong and that our differences--racial, religious, regional, or economic--are somehow trivial, [but] facile expectations and simple explanations are being constantly upended. Spend time actually talking to Americans, and you discover that most evangelicals are more tolerant than the media would have us believe, most secularists more spiritual. Most rich people want the poor to succeed, and most of the poor are both more self-critical and hold higher aspiration than the popular culture allows. Most Republican strongholds are 40 percent Democrat, and vice versa. The political labels of liberal and conservative rarely track people's personal attributes."
His motivation could be to try to get government policy to more nearly reflect the more common interests of the American People, and rise above the cynical and diversionary partisan wedge politics that all of those who have accepted corporate campaign donations for the last twenty years have obliged themselves to pursue.
At least I like to hope so.
(and I hope he chooses Wesley Clark to be his retired general vice president)
