Your algae eater must have been overeating because they like to eat alot and when full grown they tend to latch-on and hang on to any fish that gets close by, usually till it dies.

Algae eaters, plecos, and Otos have soft under-belly so it will stretch if it overeats.

And also even tho their name "Algae Eater" is from their sucker-mouth appearance they actually dont eat that much algae when mature only when young.

Hope this info helps

An algae eater will not get pregnant because it is an egg layer. Your fish could be full of eggs and ready to spawn but I doubt it. I would lean more towards it possibly being sick. If it is fat and has raised scales then it could have dropsy which is highly infectious. Once they have raised scales there isn't much you can do to save them but you need to separate it from other fish in the tank so that it doesn't spread.

Your fish is probably experiencing the symptoms of amclynia. Watch out for a swelling brain. Also, if it has babies, MOVE THEM TO A SEPERATE TANK AWAY FROM ANY OTHER FISH. They could be Amclynia positive. This disease is also human trasferable, so wear an oxygen mask and goggles and cover up any scratches or open wounds you may have. Also wear clothes.
