They heal on their own. The vet simply sets them or pins them straight. Honestly, it is better to have them set and just casted. The pins bring on many problems and introduce bacteria into the bone. They are just a horrible idea all around. That goes for human fractures too. Don't let someone pin them. Get them set in a cast. They will heal on their own and the less trauma the better.
Vets sometimes prefer to "suggest" the $500+ pins rather than the $100 casting. But casting is better for the dog. When you open the skin you allow bacteria to enter. Unless it is an open fracture insist on a cast. You don't want to take a chance on having a bone infected.

Would depend on what bone is broken,
Where you live,
Some bones just need splinting, others plating and pinning.
This is too broad a question with not enough info i'm afraid.
If your dog has broken it's leg take it to the vets, they can and will give you a quote before doing any major work.
They will need to do an xray first so they can give you an idea what course to treatment will be appropriate, at guess you'll be looking at £100+ for consult and xrays

If your dog has a broken bone than what the vets charges is not important. Get the dog to the vet and then make arrangement to pay for it.

This is not the time to be cheap or to worry about money.

I don't know about current trends, but a few years ago, a vet charged me $600 to set a broken bone in my dog. When I complained that I didn't have that much money, the vet threatened to put my dog down! This vet was quite rude, quite hostile.
the only way I could get my dog back, was to leave this jerk a series of post dated checks to cover the $600.
I never took my dog back to that vet.
