If the x rays showed that you needed a root canal but you havent had any symptoms such as pain yet then your should be ok to wait a little untill you come up with some money( if that is the issue) but don't wait too long! in other had If your are expiericing pain already My advise to you is not to wait...I work in a dental office and I've seen so many people come in at the last minute with a lot of pain!!! yes the pain can go away for a while but It will come back! a tempoary filling will not work! If your have infection the dentist will prescribe antibiotics which will take the infection away and clam the pain...but don't think the pain will not come back...I have seen a lot of people having to end up extracting the tooth because the pain is unbearable and it is much cheaper than a root canal.....another option is to have an emergency palliative treatment aka unfinished root canal...this procedure consist the taking the nerve out of the tooth...but the root canal will be uncomplete and you still have to go back to have it finished...if you have insurance this will usually be covered and you will have to pay less out of pocket than you would for a complete root canal..but like I said you would still have to go back and finish your root canal ( this is only when the pain is ubearable) D9110 of the ADA code...ask your dentist more more info

It's best to ask your dentist. A root canal is required (normally) because decay has reached the pulp of the tooth (where the heart/blood supply is). If it becomes infected, it will cause pain.
If you get a root canal, the Dr will usually place a temporary filling, which usually has Oil of Clove in it. This substance helps "soothe" a traumatized tooth. It can buy you some time before you have the rest of your treatment completed...but it won't last for long! This temporary filling is similar to a piece of chalk. It's not intended to be there for more than a few months.
You won't want to wait very long after your root canal for the crown work or filling...a tooth with a root canal performed can become brittle, and will break or fracture...which causes a new dilema.
All in all, speak with your dentist about the choices or amount of time you might be able to buy. An educated answer would be the best one for you.
Good luck! ;)

It really depends... If your experiencing pain right now and their is an infection then a filling isn't going to do anything at all. If you simply have a deep cavity and the root isn't actually dead yet, then what is called a temporary medical filling could be used to try and allow the tooth to heal slightly before a permanent filling is put in.
You may also want to get another dentist for a second opinion if the first one has said root canal and you have reason to believe he is simply wanting to do it for the money. Root canals are probably the most over done procedure in dentistry that isn't always required. But its easy, cheap to do and generates a lot of profit.

I'm going to give you my most honest advice from experience just save up for the root canal or risk getting it extracted in the future. I myself had 2 root canals 4 years ago on two molars and just 6 months ago had to have two more on the same teeth because it wasn't up to the Dr's standards. I don't think the doctor will give you a filling on a tooth that needs a root canal anyways just because theres so much risk of infection or worst a future extraction so just save up and get it done, its not as bad as people say, i mean it is very uncomfortable but I'm a baby when it comes to pain. Good luck!

their are two steps in a root canal.. the 1st is an open and med. where the canals are cleaned and medicine is given to get rid of the infection. than you come back for the remaing step to fill the canals. ask your dentist if you'd be able to get the open and med first until you save enough money for the root canal

the reason a root canal is done is because the cavity is already at the nerves and if you just filled over the cavity chances are good that the nerve will still ache.... when a dentist performs a root canal all they do is remove the nerve then fill the cavity that's why you don't feel any more pain.

The pain will keep coming back....very quickly. Most dentists will do the root canal and put a temporary filling in there until you can afford the perm. post and crown...Ask your dentist...Don't wait until the pain is unbearable...I have been in that situation and you don't want to be there! They put me on One very strong antibiotic and 3 pain killers at one time...I chewed the pain killers up at the CVS and it took me about 20 minutes to drive home, by the time I got home, half of my face was numb! Do not wait to get dental work done!!!!! It isn't worth the pain, This I promise you!

They won't do it like covering a cavitity up with a cap, they hav to give you the root canal before or else it will be worse to have to dig through the filling to get to it.

i don't even think a dentist will do that cause i asked mine and he said that it would end up getting pulled that way and when they have to pull a tooth they charge as much as the root canal
