Sometimes the brake pads don't retract properly and overheat. The calipers seemed to retract ok when we bled the lines after replacing the clipers, rotors and pads.

The calipers, rotors and pads were all new.

The usual cause of that problem is the brake hoses. After many years of use, the brake hoses swell inside and restrict the movement of the fluid. It will expand to let the fluid/pressure go out to the calipers but when the pedal is released the hose collapses inside and traps pressure in the caliper causing them to drag.

Did you thin about replacing the Rubber Front Brake lines?
Sounds like they are not letting all the fluid return when the brakes are not applied
