The better question could be, Why are there poor people?

They are not overwhelmingly Democrats. The vast majority of poor people live in the Southern US and as we know those states vote mostly Republican.

And as a middle class person why would I vote for a party that wants to take 30-40% of the pay that I earn????

Tell them the truth about the Republicans, and they'll keep voting for the Democrats. Or, in the case of poor white Southerners, start voting for the Democrats for the first time in 40 years.

They convince them that the entitlement programs, such as welfare, are to their benefit, and that the democrats promote those programs.

And the poor, who are receiving these entitlements, cannot possibly get off of them because the programs are designed to keep them on the govt. nipple.

It is kind of like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson getting the black voters to vote democrat because they claim that the republicans are racist, when Sharpton and Jackson are 2 of the most racist people in American and have ABSOLUTELY NO DESIRE to decrease racism because that is where their money comes from.

Same principle...keep the poor on the nipple, and convince them that it is in their best interest.

Speckofdust...your comments are ignorant. Capitalism IS a more pure form of democracy than the socialism of the dems. In capitalism, consumers vote with their wallets. To say capitalism is favored over democracy, is like saying water is favored over light. There is not a connection.

montreaux...the working class pay the taxes???? ROFLMAO!!! The wealthy in this country pay nearly all of the taxes. The top 5% of earners pay over 75% of the taxes!!! You are WAY OFF!

Big Momma...the dems promote welfare which keeps people ON the nipple. The republicans want to help people OFF the nipple. Programs like school vouchers would have helped poor people IMPROVE their situation, but the dems would have no part of it because they would lose voters.

FordDriver...If you take away the nipple, people tend to start eating on their own. The dems keep the poor on the nipple to keep votes. EVERYONE can improve their situation by getting off of govt. independence. Read "The Richest Man in Babylon" and learn how to think for yourself and for your future instead of listening to the liberal lie.

It does seem that a majority of lower class (financially not morally, or mentally) are Dems. I think the one thing that they see in the democratic party is that they promise changes for the poor and want to increase government assistance and aid. They usually see (as do many dems) the reps as rich white elitists. The key is no politician is doing anything for the poor but when we consider the tax increase the Democrats want to bring to the table is scary with what it will do to everyone in this country.

this is totally not true.. Democrats represent and are represented by the MIDDLE CLASS.. Not the poor.. Poor people overwhelmingly do not vote.. It is the socially/politically/intellectually aware voter who keeps the Democratic party alive..

It is the hatefull/uneducated/dissillusioned voter who keeps the Republican party alive.. You are fooled into thinking that Democrats only want to socialize the country and turn it into a welfare state. Democrats have the nations best intrests in mind.. Peaceful/Diplomatic resolution to foriegn policy issues, Strong environmental policy, Strong corporate liability, strong economic policy..

Because the Republicans cut programs for the poor and Democrats help them. It's very selfish, really. But why are Rich people overwhelmingly Republican? Same reason.

Because it's the working class people that pay the majority of the taxes... and all the republicans do is use that tax money for their own devices. Dems at least make an attempt to use it for better purposes.

Lower class I may be, but I'm intelligent enough to see right through both sides, therefore I support neither.

The Republican Party is the more aggressive capitalist party and seeks to rape and exploit the working class without restriction. The Democratic Party is also an aggressive capitalist party but they believe that the American working class should only be raped to a certain degree. The Republicans don't mind seeing working class people living in abject poverty. The Democrats are a tad offended by abject poverty and prefer that the working class live merely in poverty.

Dem's give to the poor, keeps them poor and they stay in their voting group. You see, you take away all the freebies and why would the poor vote for the Dem's? They wouldn't now would they.
