Yes. rats can be litterbox trained. Not all rats take to it, but with patience and the right methods most rats do.
You don't need a fancy litter box. A metal cake pan that you can buy from a dollar store, or thrift store, will do just fine.
Make sure that the litter is **completely** different then the litter that you use in the rest of the cage so the rats know the difference. I use baby blankets for cage bedding and Yesterday's News cat litter in the littler box.
Start by cleaning, and deodorizing the cage and for a couple of days watch to see what corner of the cage the rats are using for a toilet. Clean this corner and place the litterbox there. Put some of the feces and urine-soaked bedding in the litter box to let the rats know they still have their toilet corner. Continue this method until the rats are consistant. It means quick cleanups in the cage if the rats go elsewhere.
Some rats have even learned to use the litterbox before they come out to play.

Rats are smart, but they're individuals & some are more interested in litter training than others. We're had success with some of ours, but not with everyratty, and a few had been very good about using the box but eventually decided that it was more fun to sleep/eat/play in than to simply use for a toilet.
It is helpful if you notice one corner of the cage that your guys use most often. You can get a litter box made for small animals or use a shallow plastic container & use cage clips or something to keep it firmly in place. Put an inch or 2 of litter in it-- not the same kind that you use for their bedding (we put Yesterday's News in the litter boxes, Total Comfort on the cage floor). Put some of your guys' droppings in it to give them the idea & keep the rest of their cage even cleaner than usual for awhile. When you see them using the box, praise them for it.
Good luck & when you adopt your rats I hope you decide to get 2 girls or 2 boys so they can hang out together.

Rats are very trainable. I have three of them myself! I taught my first rat to use the litter box by putting her in it and praising her. When I saw her getting ready to poo or pee, I would put her in the litter box and if she did her business I would give her a treat. She eventully caut on to it. She never peed in it, just pooped. I adopted another one and she learned that behavior from my main rattie. Suddenly, all of my rats have taught each other how to use the litter box! I didnt have to even teach some of them how to, they just caut on to it. You dont have to litter train them though. It is optional, and only if you have time for it.

Yes, you can train a rat! They are very smart. I've never tried to be honest but I've heard of it. You'll need patience though. Search "train rats" on Google.

Personally I dont see it being done, rats poop as they walk. I have had tons of pet rats. They are highly intelligent but also leave a trail of feces behind them. Good luck. They do make awesome pets though.
