My hamster just jumped out of my hands when I was putting him bak in his cage and fell about 5 inches. He hit my nightstand pretty hard and played dead fo about 2 seconds. When I picked him up, he moved a little then started making these little squeaking sounds that kind of sound like a little sneeze or something. What is wrong with him? He didn't seem to have broken anything. Is he OK?

Yeah, he's probably hurt a little; I'm not sure 4 or 5 inches would do much. I he just scared?

Take him to the vet. Yes, he could be hurt badly.

You will need to watch him for any bleeding, especially out of the nose or mouth, this will indicate internal bleeding. If there is internatl bleeding you will need to put him down. Most likely he will be ok, the next few hours should show whats going on. If he's not moving around a lot, keeps squeaking, and/or keeps making the sneezing sound, you will want to take him to the vet. Just relax, leave him alone, hopefully he's just scared and maybe a little shook up. And for future reference, only play with small critters close to the ground. Also, no Hampsters do not cry in the sense that people do, no animal does.

He probably appeared to 'play dead' because he was stunned. The crying noise like a sneeze that you hear is the clicking that hamsters make when they are scared or angry. He is probably scared and nervous that he might fall again.
Pay careful attention to his movements for the next two days. If he is walking normally, drinking water, eating normally, and able to use his wheel, he is fine. If he starts bleeding from anywhere, and body parts start to protrude (eyes, rectum), or starts walking in circles and cannot seem to walk straight, take him to a vet immediately. Those are signs of internal or brain injuries.
Honestly, I've seen hamsters do five foot drops and be fine. Just keep an eye on him to be on the safe side.

i have had hamsters for years and they are tricky little blighters to keep hold of. it would seem he is a little hurt although it would be hard to tell how badly. the best thing to do (apart from a vet) is to keep ur hamster nice and warm and keep a close eye on him for the next 24 hours. if he seems better after that and is eating and drinking normally then he will be ok i am sure. a bit of advice though when you are holding him sit on the bed as he can not fall far or hurt himself on a mattress. i hope he gets better soon o and i have never seen any of my hamsters cry but yeah they don't half squeal when they want to.

yes they make vocalizations when they are hurt. i dont know since i cannot see him what is wrong, just make sure he is able to move and walk around fine. you may let him rest for a little while, make sure he doesnt have a concussion. he may have just gotten the wind knocked out of him. any case i'd let him rest and just observe him, maybe give him a treat to make him feel better. the worst that could happen would be paralyzed or brain damage.

Yeah, consider taking him to the vet...Hamsters have sensitive bone structures. He probably is in a bit of pain if he made a sound.

the squeaking meant he freaked himself out and was scared. he'll be fine, mine have jumped off the dining room table to escape for the night, I'd find them the next day fine. just be careful they love to wiggle and jump out of your hands.

its possible that he could have a minor concusion. if he hit his head then it could have given him a pretty bad head injury. or it might just be that hes in shock. either way, make sure that hes comfortable and that there arent any bright lights that could give him even more of a headach.
