The knots look just like the picture but theirs is flat and mine is a series of spirals. Is it because the hemp is not all the same thickness? Is that ok? Will my necklace still look nice spiraled? Thanks.

If you use only one half of the knot you get a regular spiral. If you use both halves you get a flat knot. If you intent to do both halves but at times forget to do the second half it will spiral slowly and unevenly.

Macrame is wonderful, if you like the result you have done it right.
Spiraling, slowly twisting, zigzagging, all it right if you like it.
But if you want to repeat your work it is better to understand what you have done, therefor a few links.

Here is a link to the same knot (I expect) on a different website:
http://knopen.ismijnhobby.nl/tables/square_knot_table.html

If you do not tie your knot that way, maybe you do only one half:
http://knopen.ismijnhobby.nl/tables/macrame_text_table.html
Click on the picture of the square knot, turning, if you want to see if that is the same as you do it now.

Here is a different set of instructions again, this one showing how it should look in a photo:http://www.curbly.com/threadbanger/posts/1979-How-to-Make-A-Macrame-Bracelet-or-Necklace-

You are using a different type knot than what you are looking at in the picture. There is a square knot which doesn't twist and a half/square knot which does. Either works, it's just a different style.
