Science does have a say-in. I never mentioned anything about the Mayans. According to NASA (go on their page) they see a solar storm around 2010-2012 time period.

I have slept through all the previous dates of destruction predicted for the Earth. I'll no doubt also miss those in 2012, 2036 etc.

Science has nothing to say about what will happen in 2012.

The date is from ancient Mayan calendars and there is a lot of philosophical and new age debate about the validity of their calendars.
But for science and scientists (as far as we know right now), it will just be another year.

The Sun goes through a cycle of magnetic activity every 11 years. During the peak of the cycle, there is more magnetic activity, and more flaring activity. If you've never noticed it before, you won't now. Basically, you get more auroras and some satellite disruption.

Nothing out of the ordinary is going to happen. The Earth will certainly not be destroyed, no matter what Mel Gibson told you.

To the best of my knowledge, all of the hu-bub about December 21, 2012 comes from the fact that the Mayan calender was predicted to end on that date, the Winter Solstice. A lot of people seem to think that the world will end on this day, and I cannot understand why. Of all of the false prophecies throughout history, this ranks as one of the most absurd. Not worth your time.

Well their are predictable cycles of solar storms, which basically means that the sun is releasing large amounts of energy. The worry is that these bursts of energy could shut down satellite systems, or shut down power grids and cause blackouts by making the grid go haywire.

Many people say that the world will end, but they also say that the world will end in 2036 because of a comet or meteor or asteroid or whatever. Don't believe them. It's worthless to do so and it's just a waste of time. Nothing is going to happen. The earth has survived for millions of years already and it will continue to exist for millions more.

Wow, these Mayan predictions are really getting out of hand. Solar storm? Well, at least it's original.
