Some one told me that his long hair will help him stay cooler but I think if we shave him it would help more. Any suggestions?

The reason a coat doesn't make a dog hotter is because dogs don't sweat, but pant. If you were to wear a coat you would get hot because your sweat wouldn't evaporate. Dogs lose their heat by panting and letting the wet on their tongue evaporate. So shaving the dog will only make it's body take on more heat because it has no coat to insulate it. Also a shaved dog can get sun burnt very easily especially if it has light colored skin. And lastly I don't think a shaved dog is as nice to look at.

I would think they would be cooler, I know I would if I wasnt wearing a coat, but I did just hear that same thing about if they have long hair leave it long to keep them cool. I guess maybe that's why a dog with short hair doesnt grow a long winter coat. Who knows, if you do shave your dog dont get it too short, could make it easier to sunburn the dogs skin.

No, dog breeds have the coat they have to protect them from the weather. Make sure that dogs can get out of the sun, the heat, and into the shade at very least.. Provide LOTS of cool fresh water.

You might trim some of the long hair, but don't expose the skin to the sun, because it will burn.

But better options are to get a shaded sandbox for him to dig in when it's hot. And you can buy a hose from PetsMart that will provide a mist in the summer... and helps cool the area.

A $10 plastic kiddie pool can help, too.

Indeed your dog needs his hair to stay cool, it is an insulation to protect him. Do not shave him.

daily brushing and proper coat maintance will keep him comfortable,, sometimes shaving promotes unnessecary sunburn... keep your dog cool by limiting exercise during the hottest part of the day, give him icecubes in his water and let him swim and be inside with the ac on.... SAME way you keep cool....

it is true, the fur keeps it cool. shaving your dog will be a total disaster and will put your dog at risk. without it's fur, it will get sunburn, skin cancer and irritation, etc. their skkin is really sensitive.

I have heard that their long hair keeps them cool as well. But you would think that its common sense to take the hair off and the dog will be cool. I don't know. Its tough to figure this one out. My parents shave theirs, don't really know if it helps them all that much though honestly....Give it a try and see what happens.
