Coprophagia (the act of eating feces) can happen for many, many reasons. This behavior in dogs has not been well-researched but there are some reasons for this to happen in dogs:
- Due to assorted health problems, including: pancreatitis, intestinal infections, food allergies creating mal-absorption.
- To get attention from their owners.
- From anxiety, stress, or having been punished for bad behaviors.
- They had been punished for having gone to the bathroom in the past, and they attempt to clean up out of fear to be punished again.
- In an attempt to clean up in crowded conditions (often done by other canines in dens).
- Because puppies taste everything and discover that feces are edible and, perhaps, tasty, especially when fed a high fat content diet.
- Because of the protein content of the feces.
Take your dog to the vet, if everything checks out it and the dog has a clean bill of health, then you know that this might be a behavioral thing and not a health problem.

well dogs have very keen senses especially smeel. It is simple, the dog will eat his feces if it still smells food i it, and while a dogs immune sytem is much stronger than a humans they usually will not get sick from it. so it really isnt nothing to worry aboutmy friend

Feces is high in alot nutrients and things that dogs like and need.
Also, dogs sometimes do it to 'cover their tracks" I haven't had a dog who has done it but I usualy pick it up right away due to the high salmanila content. Dogs can handle it in their stomaches, but I dont want it around.
I know its nasty, especialy when our dog licks your face afterwards...

It's called Coprophagia and there are tons of explanations for it, like nutrients, boredom, socializtion, but nothing has been proven to be an absolute cause for it. make sure she has a well balanced diet. Also, vets have a medication that makes their poop taste bad, to discourage the dogs from eating it. It tastes good going down, but is excreted with a bitter or unpleasant taste. Also, try to catch your dog before she does it and discourage her. She will learn.

My dog does it too - but she won't eat her own. I really don't know why. She is healthy, well fed, well behaved - apart from this. At first I thought she was "cleaning up". But now she will lunge for poo when we are out walking. If I tell her to stop right then, she will. But if I'm not paying full attention, she tucks in. I'm going to try the pineapple chunks, see if that works. I'm really hoping she grows out of it though.

It's quite common but makes the breath stink
An easy way to cure this is by giving the dog pineapple chunks...I know it sounds daft but they wont eat their poo again - It worked with my dog
Good luck

Because hes a dog and thats what dogs do. If you go to the pet store or maybe your local vet you can find some special powder to mix in the dog food. Once digested it makes the dog poop taste really bad. ( As if it tasted good in the first place) You can also go to your local grocery store and purchase Adolph's meat tenderizer. Its in the spice section. Sprinkle some over dog food and again once digested the dog poo should taste really bad to ur pup. Just some suggestions cause this can be difficult to stop.

Your dog is lacking something in her diet. I'm guessing you are feeding commercial dog food. I have seen this problem cured with the proper diet. Get on amazon and buy the book. Also realize that the longer your dog does this, it becomes a habit...break it now before it's too late, change your dog over to a homemade food diet

She has strong mother instints to keep things clean. My dog did the same thing for awhile. It is nasty and unfortunately I don't know what to suggest to help her stop. It is just an instinct some female dogs carry and hopefully she will eventually quit.
