Yesterday I watched Afghani TV news on channel 2183.
First news: a visit of their US Master, Robert Gates.
Second news: a record yield of poppy.
Third news: a truckload of pure heroin captured.
A progress in Iraq: after the "surge" USA increased controlled area of Baghdad from 30% to 40%. Terrific news.

About 1,500 people died from the fighting in Afganistan this year with most of them insurgents. For the most part, the Taliban and company are making a poor comeback there.
As far as Iraq goes, half the Iraqi forces have been trained and equipt and on their own. They are patroling 17 of the 18 providences. Seven of those providences have already been turned over to the iraqi government. The death rate has fallen 50% from last year and the death rate per 1,000 in 2006 was already lower than Italy, France, Germany and the U.S. Italy and Germany had trice the death rate per 1,000 in 2006 according to the online CIA factbook.
Iraq also has less of an immigration outflow problem than Iran, Saudia Arabia and Mexico among others.

I saw two back-to-back clips on the Daily Show that really summed it all up for me. First, Tony Blair was painstakingly explaining how the situation needs to be stabilized before the troops pull out, then they showed George W. Bush saying bluntly, "We're not pulling out while I'm President!" Think about that for a moment. He's not even considering the possibility of success. He doesn't even seem to have any definition of what "success" is. No matter what happens, he'll keep the troops in Iraq as long as he's in office. How sad is that?

I think we are making progress in Iraq, but I think the key is to scale down the military while replacing them with FBI, police and other skilled professionals. The military work primarily as security and ultimately do little to improve Iraq.
If we want them to have a stable police force, we need to train them with police trainers. Why use a hammer when you need a screwdriver?

Our corrupt politicians don't even have bench marks for iraq. So who knows what progress is and how do you measure it?

The news is that they freaking hate us and we should leave.
700 years of secular infighting will not be stopped by a troop surge.
Freedom can't be spread with guns.
