Mechanic tells me it is making noise but still working somewhat. $700 repair. Is total failure inevitable, or might it last a long time anyway?

If it's a 700 dollar repair I would just add a few hundred and have it replaced for a new one. When a compressor starts making noise, it means there are some busted bearings inside. These busted bearings could make your compressor die within a year or a month or a week. Why risk it, just get a new one and clear your mind of worries for atleast another 3-5 years?

That is an unkown. It would all depend on what is causing the noise. The repair would depend on how long you are planning on keeping the car.
good luck with it.

Tough question. I think it will eventually fail. Sooner than later. Then you won't have a/c.
