a component cable set can be 3 specific tuned composite cables. depending on the brand you should use the green as a substitute for composite video. But if they are $75 US or less you should be able to use any of them.

Yes you can, definitely. They are basically the same kind of cable, but the component cables will be designed for larger bandwidth (high definition) than standard composite (yellow) cables. This will not cause any problems, but the other way around (using a composite cables for the component signal) may not produce the best picture, especially if the cable is longer than 6'.

Let's get this straight:

Component are the red, green and blue connectors.
Composite is just one yellow connector.

If you have a DVD player with component outputs (red, green an blue) then you can use the red, green and blue cables here but you cannot then connect any of this cables to the yellow composite input of your TV because it will not work (signals are not the same).

But if you have a DVD player or any other equipment with yellow composite output then you can connect here any of the red, green or blue cables and then connect this to the yellow composite input of your TV. It will work just like using the normal yellow cable.

Component and Composite are two differant things, and if you plug a component cable in to a composite port then you will get nothing, nada, zip, because they are two differant standards and signals
