I particularly want to download the radio programmes (BBC4 and BBC7) onto my new MP3 player. I'm not overly technically minded so the more simple you can explain it to me the better (LOL). Many thanks!!

BBC use Real Player format, but it is set up for listen again, not for download. You need an additional program to record the stream as it plays. I use "Audacity". Note you need the MP3 add on for this. Start Audacity recording, start the Listen again, stop the recording, trim the unwanted bits out and export the file as mp3. Unfortunately this has to be done in real time, but it's reliable and you can let it get on with it and do something else.

not sure about the MP3 download but to get a radio link use the BBC's
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

click on listen again or listen now
if you don't have the facility it will direct you to a download site for real player.
