I prof. wants everything saved using Microsoft word. I have Word Perfect and when I go to save something I have the option of saving it as ms word. Is that the same thing? I hope so. Thanks for your time.

Yes, save Word Perfect documents in M$-Word format, your Prof will be able to read them in his Word.

Yes. Your version is probably the trial. Once this expires you can no longer edit. You now need to buy the full licence to activate it.
