the ear infection is probably the reason. I would definately see a vet. Don't panic too much about the eating right now - believe it or not but dogs can actualy go quite a few days with out eating with no long term side effects (coyotes & wolves don't eat regular meals either). Also, if a dog is sick, (like people) they don't eat too much. Regardless, I would definately see the vet for a complete check. I'm sure once his ear is feeling better, he will feel more like eating. (when the ear pain is gone!) GOOD LUCK

your dog is probably not eating becuase of the pain in his ear. ear infections can cause head aches and disrupt equilibrium, both of which can cause nausia. just like people, dogs can lose their appetite when they don't feel well. the pain medicine should help him feel well enough to eat. if you are really worried that he is not getting the food he needs, try giving something that he can't resist, or putting something especially tasty in his food (bacon grease was always a big hit with my dog). if he still doesn't eat, make sure at least that he is drinking water, if he's not then you should take him to the vet right away and tell them, dehydration will hurt him before hunger will.

If I were you, I'd ask the vet to give you some antibiotics for the poor guy, he probably has a terrible infection, he shouldn't have to wait that long. If that vet won't give you any for your dog then go see another, I've never heard of a veterinarian keep an animal on hold like that, that just doesn't make sense.

The ear infection probably is the reason. When he chews (as with humans) the ear canal moves. It probably hurts him. I think you need to see another vet. My dog, a golden retriever, is prone to ear infections. Our vet gives us an anti-biotic that we put in her ear. He has also told us we may give her aspirin for the pain. But the couple times we have had to have her ear flushed he did it right then and there with no sedation. Unless you dog is very aggressive and they are worried about being attacked during the procedure this doesn't sound right, especially to put the procedure off for so long. I would get a second opinion.

For dogs, they are instinctual, they will not starve themselves to death. They may lose weight, but they won't die from not eating. Of course I say that and there are exceptions. If their mouth is hurting them very badly, they will refuse to eat because of the pain. My friends chi had that problem and she simply had to have all of her teeth removed because of this. If they have problems with their sinuses and can't smell, they may not even be aware that there is food in front of them. The same chi I spoke of also had this problem.

If he isn't drinking water, I would take him to the vet.
If your dog is still drinking water, he is most likely okay, just a little under the weather. When you're sick, you don't like to eat, do you? I know I don't.

Good Eevening:
Try to entice the dog by addign a little chopped bacon to his food. Mix it in well so that he cannot eat it all off the top. DO not feed a full meal at first, only half. Make sure your dog is drinking water! Tell your vet of his lack of appetite. it may be that he is in pain. Also, tell your vet to check your dog's teeth, he may have an abcess in the molar area. Monitor his stools. Are they dry and hard, or loose and runny? Diarreah can cause dehydration and death in dogs. Ceck your dog's gums, and tounge. Are they pale and whitish? If they are, then you need to go to the vet immediately.

You really need another vet. Did they say what kind of an ear infection? Yeast? Use rubbing alcohol in the ears for this. If it was bacterial a decent vet would have given antibiotics. Mites? Lindane would solve the problem or even lice shampoo in the ears. If all they did was just give pain meds and ignore the problem then it was a really poor vet job.

absolutely! You may try to cook your dog some white rice and boil a chicken breast. Cut up the chicken into small pieces, pour it and the broth from boiling over the rice, and feed it to him lukewarm. Also another reason he might not be eating due to the ear infection is that when he drops his head down to his bowl it may put pressure on his ear drum. Try raising his bowl or hold the bowl at nose level so he can hold his head straight out instead of down. It might help.

Call your vet at his after hours emergency number - they all have them, and explain what happened. Or call an emergency vet clinic - they are open 24/7. Last, call the poison control hotline and for a fee, they will help you. Going forward, keep medication out of your dog's reach.
