I have my BA degree in Biology, but am not sure how to get my foot in the door. Is there any advice anyone can give me or direction on how to start that. I live in NJ

I got my state of Texas job just by going to a state web site, finding a job I liked and filling out an application for it. You need to go the the state of New Jersey web site and look. See the source. There may be other places to look, so don't just use my source. It takes WORK to find the right job, but it can be done.

Contact some one who works for the state (DEC) or some other department you may have to take civil service exams, I'm not sure what the rules are for NJ (i live in NY). Your best bet is to talk to some one who works for the state if you know anyone and see how they were able to get their position.

You might start by doing some seasonal work if you cannot get something full time right away...which I suspect will be the case. Check out these websites for some seasonal positions. Also, do a searh on environmental consultant firms in your area...they always seem to be hiring...if not full time you may be able to work part time for them until you are more experienced.

Almost all of the state jobs require a civil service exam. You can go online to your state and search for any open jobs, and even job titles and see what their requirements are for each position. They tend to have different levels for each type of position, accountant I, accountant II, etc. and typically you have to start at a lower rank and then they will have exams to move to higher levels.

I would contact your local department of agriculture and talk to them. If they cant help you then they should be able to point you in the right direction. I wish you good fortune in your endeavors and hope that you wont become burnt out on trying to help preserve our wild life.
